Winter Bloom Festival Boosts Tourism: What It Means for Business Growth in Oman
NAKHAL: Wakan Village, located in the Wilayat of Nakhal in Al Batinah South Governorate, welcomed 39,976 visitors in 2025, showing a steady increase from 36,759 visitors in 2024 and 35,302 in 2023.
This rise underscores Wakan’s growing appeal as a unique mountain tourism destination, attracting travelers both from across Oman and internationally.
Renowned for its terraced farms, ancient mountain trails, and cool climate, Wakan offers a distinctive combination of eco-tourism, adventure, and heritage experiences.
Dr. Al Muatasim bin Nasser Al Hilali, Director of the Heritage and Tourism Department in Al Batinah South Governorate, stated that this growth reflects a significant qualitative leap largely driven by favorable winter weather and the village’s seasonal natural attractions.
From late January to February, apricot and plum trees bloom, covering the village in hues of white and pink, a rare spectacle often likened to Japan’s cherry blossom season. This floral display draws photographers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts seeking cooler temperatures at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters above sea level.
The grape harvest season and the popularity of mountain hiking—especially the challenging 700-step climb to the village summit—also contribute to the influx of visitors, particularly on weekends and public holidays.
Dr. Al Hilali added that the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is actively improving infrastructure, including securing mountain paths with guardrails and rest areas, expanding parking facilities, and encouraging local residents to convert traditional homes into guesthouses and heritage lodges.
He further revealed that the ministry is exploring the feasibility of a cable car or alternative transportation system to alleviate congestion during peak seasons, in coordination with the Royal Oman Police (ROP).
Wakan Village remains one of Al Batinah South’s premier high-altitude destinations, distinguished by its temperate climate and diverse agricultural produce, including apricots, pomegranates, plums, walnuts, and grapes.
