Ministry of Heritage and Tourism officially opened the Meteorite Corner at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Monday, as part of its ongoing efforts to leverage geological heritage to enrich tourism and cultural experiences.<\/p>\n<p>The newly inaugurated corner features a unique collection of rare meteorite samples from the &#8220;Jiddat al-Harasis&#8221; region. Visitors to the hotel can view these specimens up close and learn about their historical and scientific significance, as well as Oman\u2019s commitment to preserving them as vital cultural heritage.<\/p>\n<p>A highlight of the display is a distinctive sample of the Jiddat al Harasis 91 meteorite, recognized as the largest meteorite fall discovered in Oman to date. This meteorite fall spans approximately 52 kilograms, with over 700 pieces collected, totaling around 4,600 kilograms. Scientific research places the original fall at more than 12,600 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the Meteorite Corner showcases a sample from the Jiddat al Harasis 73 meteorite, classified as a stony chondrite of the L6 type. It is the second-largest meteorite fall found in Oman. Weighing over 20 tons in space, this meteorite\u2019s fall is estimated to have occurred 15,600 years ago during the Paleolithic era. Documented collections include 3,638 pieces weighing a total of 620.9 kilograms, spread along a 25.8-kilometer path.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit aims to raise awareness among both local and international visitors about the significance of meteorites, their scientific and historical importance, and the legal frameworks protecting them under Oman\u2019s Heritage Law.
