Russia\u2019s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil. The move, announced by the U.S. Treasury, caused global oil prices to surge by 3% on Thursday and prompted India to consider reducing its Russian oil imports.<\/p>\n<p>Just last week, Trump had indicated plans for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine. However, on Wednesday, Trump canceled the summit, expressing doubts about achieving meaningful progress and citing unproductive conversations with Putin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe canceled the meeting with President Putin \u2014 it just didn\u2019t feel right to me,\u201d Trump told White House reporters. \u201cIt didn\u2019t feel like we were going to get to the place we have to get. So I canceled it, but we\u2019ll do it in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that Washington remains prepared to take additional measures, focusing on restricting Russia\u2019s financial resources to sustain its war effort, which began in February 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn response to President Putin\u2019s refusal to end this senseless war, the Treasury is sanctioning Russia\u2019s two largest oil companies that fund the Kremlin\u2019s war machine,\u201d Bessent stated.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s Foreign Ministry condemned the sanctions as &quot;counterproductive&quot; and affirmed that its objectives in Ukraine remain unchanged. Oil and gas revenues, which have declined by 21% year-on-year, still constitute about 25% of Russia\u2019s budget and are the primary source of funding for Moscow\u2019s military operations in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed gratitude for the new U.S. sanctions, calling them &quot;very important&quot; while urging for continued pressure on Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>The sanctions raised concerns over potential disruptions to global oil supplies, driving prices up by more than 3%.
