This initiative outlines a three-phase strategy that integrates policy, technology, and infrastructure advancements to facilitate a transition toward green fuels and electric mobility.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MoTCIT)<\/strong> is entrusted with the responsibility of implementing these ambitious targets. The transport, logistics, and ICT sectors contribute approximately 20 percent to the Sultanate&#8217;s total carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Eng Said bin Hamoud al Maawali, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, detailed the ministry\u2019s executive plan designed to achieve carbon neutrality in three distinct phases leading up to 2050. <\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <em>Duqm Economist<\/em>, the quarterly publication of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ), Al Maawali outlined the first phase, which extends through 2030. This phase aims for a <strong>3 percent reduction in emissions<\/strong> by ensuring that <strong>25 percent of newly registered vehicles are electric<\/strong>. It also plans to decrease emissions from heavy machinery by <strong>40 percent<\/strong>, introduce biofuels in public transport, and convert select port equipment to electric power. Additionally, new mechanisms will be implemented to reduce emissions without necessitating full machinery replacements.<\/p>\n<p>The subsequent phase, running until 2040, targets a <strong>34 percent reduction in emissions<\/strong>. This phase includes deploying over <strong>20,000 electric vehicles<\/strong>, raising their share to <strong>66 percent<\/strong> of total new registrations, defining the operational lifespan of public transport fleets, establishing a regional hub for green fuel for ships, and equipping bus stations with solar panels. It also emphasizes the promotion of hydrogen-powered trucks.<\/p>\n<p>The final phase, reaching completion by 2050, aspires to achieve full decarbonization of the transport sector. Plans include transitioning all trucks and heavy equipment to hydrogen and electric technologies, while ensuring <strong>100 percent of new light vehicles are electric<\/strong>, in alignment with Oman\u2019s Net Zero goals.<\/p>\n<p>To facilitate the transition in heavy transport, the ministry is advocating the use of hydrogen-powered trucks for long-distance transportation. It is also collaborating with automotive dealers to offer competitive packages to promote electric vehicle adoption. Significant infrastructure developments are underway, including plans to install over <strong>350 public charging stations<\/strong> by 2027, each with a minimum capacity of <strong>120 kW<\/strong> along major highways, alongside fast chargers at border crossings. A shore power facility is also being developed at <strong>SOHAR Port and Free Zone<\/strong> to enhance sustainable maritime transport.<\/p>\n<p>This roadmap also includes a strategy to create an integrated green mobility ecosystem, featuring the establishment of Oman\u2019s first electric vehicle maintenance center and a partnership with the National Green Mobility Company to provide electric rental vehicles and enhance supporting infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside these initiatives, the ministry is working to replace conventional government vehicles with electric counterparts, develop a smart application to locate and monitor charging stations, establish a regulatory framework for charging tariffs and operator licensing, and create a national EV charging map in collaboration with public and private stakeholders.
