Oman’s Green Transition 2026: What OSW and OPES Mean for Your Investment Opportunities and Business Growth
MUSCAT, MAY 18 — The Sultanate of Oman has reaffirmed its dedication to sustainable development and the energy transition with the inauguration of Oman Sustainability Week (OWS) 2026 and the Oman Petroleum & Energy Exhibition (OPES) 2026 at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.
These concurrent events have attracted government officials, international energy corporations, sustainability specialists, investors, and technology providers worldwide, underscoring Oman’s expanding role as a key regional hub for dialogue, innovation, and investment in sustainability and energy transformation.
Oman Sustainability Week 2026 is themed “Sustainability in Action: Innovation, Investment, Impact,” emphasizing the conversion of sustainability goals into tangible results through technology, investment, and global cooperation. Meanwhile, OPES 2026 operates under the theme “Success through collaboration: Achieving a sustainable energy future,” focusing on partnerships and innovation to navigate the evolving global energy landscape.
At the opening ceremony, Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, highlighted Oman’s ongoing efforts to implement a development strategy driven by sustainability, balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship. He reported that renewable energy accounted for approximately 9 percent of Oman’s total electricity generation last year, coinciding with the launch of the Manah 1 and Manah 2 solar projects, which together provide a total capacity of one gigawatt.
Al Aufi detailed several national initiatives underpinning Oman’s low-carbon transition, including the National Net Zero Strategy, a regulatory framework for carbon markets, and the National Energy Transition Plan. These efforts aim to enhance Oman’s competitiveness through innovation, sustainability, and advanced technology.
He also emphasized initiatives to promote electric mobility, expand waste management and recycling, and achieve “zero routine flaring” by 2030. Oman’s energy sector has already reduced gas flaring by 50 percent. Additionally, integrating renewable energy, water management systems, and green spaces within oil and gas concession areas is enhancing Oman’s climate action while preserving natural resources.
Mohammed bin Ali al Aghbari, Director of External Affairs, Government Relations and Communications at Petroleum Development Oman, stated that the events solidify Oman’s status as a premier regional destination for responsible energy development and sustainable innovation. He noted these platforms facilitate knowledge exchange, attract investment, and foster strategic partnerships shaping the future of the regional energy industry.
Pierluigi D’Elia, Ambassador of Italy to Oman, praised the Sultanate’s rising significance as a regional center for strategic dialogue and innovation. He highlighted promising areas for collaboration between Italian and Omani institutions in renewable energy, circular economy solutions, sustainable infrastructure, and industrial technology.
Ashraf bin Hamed al Maamari, Group CEO of OQ Group, described how the company is harnessing innovation to lower emissions across current operations while investing in green energy infrastructure to support Oman’s pathway to net-zero emissions.
The events feature broad regional and international participation across the energy, sustainability, infrastructure, technology, and mobility sectors. Programs include exhibitions, technical workshops, executive networking, field activities, and accredited Continuing Professional Development.
A spotlight at OPES 2026 is the “OPES Talks” platform, which hosts high-level discussions on energy transition, the future role of oil and gas, carbon reduction strategies, and the integration of renewable and conventional energy systems. There are also sessions focusing on Oman’s ambitions in green hydrogen and renewable energy expansion.
Advanced technology is a major theme, with discussions on artificial intelligence, big data analytics, industrial automation, digital transformation, and predictive maintenance—all aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and cutting emissions. Technical presentations organized with the Society of Petroleum Engineers feature innovations in upstream operations, enhanced oil recovery, well management, and equipment reliability.
Carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies are also prominently featured, with international companies showcasing new industrial decarbonization and emissions reduction methods.
Alongside OPES, Oman Sustainability Week 2026 addresses smart cities, sustainable mobility, water security, green finance, and ESG standards. Discussions cover projects such as Sultan Haitham City, the adoption of electric and hydrogen-powered transport, low-energy desalination, water reuse systems, and integrated planning linking water, energy, food security, and climate resilience.
A major highlight is the International Resources and Technology for Sustainability Conference, organized by be’ah in partnership with Economist Impact. This conference unites global stakeholders to discuss renewable energy, hydrogen, biodiversity, circular economy strategies, sustainable finance, and innovation-driven climate resilience.

Oman’s reinforced focus on sustainability and energy transition through Oman Sustainability Week and OPES 2026 presents significant opportunities for businesses leveraging innovation in renewable energy, carbon reduction, and sustainable infrastructure. Smart investors and entrepreneurs should consider tapping into emerging sectors like green hydrogen, electric mobility, and digital technologies for operational efficiency, as Oman positions itself as a regional hub for sustainable energy investment and technological collaboration. However, companies need to align with national strategies, such as the Net Zero Strategy and carbon market regulations, to mitigate risks and ensure long-term competitiveness in a rapidly evolving energy landscape.
