European Equities Steady Amid Mideast Peace Talks: Implications for Investors in Oman’s Markets
European Markets Hold Steady Amid Geopolitical Tensions
European stock markets showed little movement on Thursday, maintaining a cautious tone following significant gains in the previous session. Investors remained vigilant amid ongoing U.S.-Iran peace negotiations, rising bond yields, and oil prices staying above $100 per barrel.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index ended the day flat at 620.28 points, having surged 1.5% on Wednesday, approaching two-week highs. Similarly, Germany’s DAX and France’s CAC 40 remained largely unchanged.
Investor sentiment appeared fragile as Iran evaluated Washington’s latest proposal aimed at resolving the conflict. U.S. President Donald Trump cautioned that military actions could resume if a consensus is not reached.
Economic data further fueled concerns, revealing that France’s private sector contracted at its fastest rate in over five years in May, while Germany’s private sector experienced a decline for the second consecutive month.
Analysts pointed out that geopolitical instability, high borrowing costs, and Europe’s reliance on oil imports are restricting market gains, despite optimism surrounding global growth driven by artificial intelligence.
Banking stocks fell by 0.4%, and shares in oil and mining sectors also declined. Market expectations are mounting for another interest rate hike by the European Central Bank in June.
Among individual companies, EasyJet saw a 0.5% increase after reporting results that met expectations, despite expressing concerns related to the Iran situation. Generali rose 2.1% following robust quarterly earnings, while defense firm QinetiQ surged 6.3% after announcing a new share buyback. Conversely, Autotrader experienced a nearly 4% decline after reporting stagnant revenue for April.
European equities have struggled to return to pre-war levels, due in part to the region’s heavy dependence on oil imports and limited exposure to the artificial intelligence sector, while global markets have shown strong recovery.
