Oman’s Digital Push to Strengthen Freelance Ecosystem: What It Means for Entrepreneurs and Investors
MUSCAT, JUNE 13 — As digital transformation accelerates in the Sultanate of Oman, digital platforms have become essential tools for freelancers to grow their businesses and access new opportunities. This shift has positioned freelance work as a significant contributor to the modern economy and a key element in efforts toward economic diversification.
The recently held symposium titled “Reality of Freelance Work in the Sultanate of Oman,” organized by the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) through its Labour Market Committee, highlighted the importance of anticipating ongoing labor market changes. The event emphasized leveraging modern work models to foster economic growth and empower national talent.
Saleh bin Juma al Balushi, OCCI’s Assistant Director General for Board Affairs, underscored that freelance work stands as a promising economic pillar that enhances labor market flexibility, empowers Omani talent, and supports diversification efforts. He stressed the need for a supportive and stimulating environment for freelancers, aligned with global trends, to boost the sector’s contribution to the national economy.
Nasser bin Juma al Harthi, Senior Media and Corporate Communications Specialist at OCCI, noted that freelancing platforms play an increasingly vital role in supporting the digital economy and offering flexible job opportunities for national talent amid rapid global labor market changes and a rising demand for digital and specialized skills.
Al Harthi also highlighted how freelancing platforms have become integral to global business models, helping freelancers reduce costs, increase productivity, and complete tasks more efficiently. He called for the establishment of a comprehensive national platform to regulate freelance work, ensuring all contracts between service providers and beneficiaries are legal and comply with Omani laws.
Regarding popular national platforms, Al Harthi identified two main categories frequently used by freelancers: those based on the Algex economy and dedicated freelance platforms, notably Dawam and Zameeli. Other diverse platforms such as Tamadun and Masdar also play important roles.
While freelance work presents promising opportunities, practitioners face several challenges, including heightened competition on global platforms, the continuous need to upgrade digital skills, cybersecurity demands, and the effort to build a reliable client base. Nevertheless, experts remain confident that ongoing government support, along with the development of legislation and digital services, will further drive the sector’s growth and boost its contribution to Oman’s economy.
