PDO’s RO 3.5 Million Social Investment Deals: Key Opportunities for Local Businesses and Entrepreneurs in Oman
Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) Invests RO 3.5 Million in Social Development Agreements
MUSCAT, JULY 5 — Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has entered into nine social investment agreements amounting to RO 3.5 million. These initiatives aim to enhance education, healthcare, youth development, and environmental protection across the Sultanate of Oman, aligning with national priorities outlined in Oman Vision 2040.
The agreements were formalized at PDO’s headquarters in Mina Al Fahal and are part of the company’s broader social investment strategy, which emphasizes creating sustainable value beyond its core energy operations.
Dr. Aflah al Hadhrami, PDO Managing Director, stated, “At PDO, we believe our success should be evident not only in our corporate achievements but also in the opportunities we help create for people and communities throughout Oman. These partnerships underscore our unwavering commitment to national priorities and our dedication to building a more resilient future for the country.”
In the education sector, PDO will continue funding the Community Scholarship Programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, enabling 150 students from concession areas to attend university. Additionally, over 1,400 students from seven government schools in Haima and Al Jazir will benefit from high-speed internet access to enhance digital learning.
Moreover, PDO has launched the first cohort of its Tamayuz program, which will offer 20 exceptional scholarship students an international enrichment experience focused on leadership, innovation, and career readiness. Another agreement with the Ministry of Education will offer practical training for 250 university students majoring in electrical engineering.
Dr. Abdullah bin Ali al Shibli, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education for Higher Education, noted, “These agreements exemplify the strategic partnership between the Ministry and PDO, supporting the goals of Oman Vision 2040, which prioritizes education as a national concern.”
In support of youth development, PDO will continue its involvement in the fifth edition of the Mustaed Youth Skills Development Programme, managed by Outward Bound Oman in conjunction with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth. This initiative will provide leadership, entrepreneurship, and employability training to 500 young Omanis aged 15 to 18.
Basil bin Ahmed al Rawas, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Sports and Youth, remarked that the collaboration with PDO reflects the national significance of the programme, which has successfully engaged around 2,700 young people over the past four years.
On the environmental front, PDO signed an agreement with the Environment Authority to bolster the National Marine Early Detection System. This project will deploy floating monitoring stations and smart sensors to keep real-time tabs on seawater quality, providing early warnings of pollution risks and safeguarding marine ecosystems and coastal economic activities.
In the healthcare sector, PDO will fund a national capacity-building initiative at the Excellence Centre for Developmental Paediatrics at University Medical City. This program will support the recruitment and training of specialized professionals, creating 74 jobs initially and expanding to 129 within three years, thereby reducing waiting times for children with developmental issues.
Sayyid Dr. Mujahid bin Rafi al Busaidy, Director General of Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, University Medical City, commented, “This agreement illustrates the effective collaboration between University Medical City and the private sector and highlights PDO’s ongoing commitment to social responsibility and enhancing healthcare quality in the nation.”
Additionally, PDO will finance the construction of a new specialist orthopaedic clinic at Khoula Hospital. This new facility will replace the existing one and is expected to increase annual treatment capacity by more than 40%. In Al Wusta Governorate, PDO will co-finance a new Accident and Emergency Unit at Al Jazir Hospital, anticipated to handle over 1,000 emergency cases annually once operational.
Dr. Rashid bin Mohammed al Alawi, Director General of Khoula Hospital, emphasized, “The agreement with PDO for the new orthopaedic clinic exemplifies a successful partnership between the healthcare and private sectors. This modern facility will enhance orthopaedic and trauma services, ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of care.”
