LONDON – British exports to the United States dropped to their lowest level in over three years in June, official data released on Thursday revealed, highlighting the impact of US President Donald Trump’s initial import tariffs.

In June, British goods exports to the US totaled £3.9 billion ($5.3 billion), a decline of £0.7 billion from May and approximately 20% below the 2024 monthly average of £4.9 billion. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), this marked the lowest export figure since February 2022, including the typically volatile sales of precious metals.

A trade agreement between British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Donald Trump took effect on June 30, easing high tariffs on cars and aerospace components. However, a 10% tariff remains on most other exports, with steel still excluded from the deal.

The ONS noted a decline in exports across all commodity categories to the US in June. Machinery and transport equipment, including vehicles affected by increased US duties, fell by £0.2 billion. Recent ONS data also indicated that one-third of UK exporting businesses with ten or more employees reported being affected by the US tariffs.

Conversely, British imports of US goods rose by £0.2 billion in June, mainly due to increased aircraft purchases.

From April to June, British exports to the US decreased by over 25%, as many manufacturers expedited shipments ahead of the initial tariff imposition in April, the report added.
