Ports in Oman Experience Surge in Container Handling: Implications for Investors and Business Growth
مسقط – The Sultanate of Oman has seen a notable rise in ship traffic and increased container and cargo handling at its ports during the first half of 2025. This growth follows initiatives by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology aimed at enhancing port infrastructure.
Muhanna bin Musa bin Baqer, Director General of Ports at the ministry, reported that container handling experienced a significant surge, with Salalah, Sohar, and Duqm ports managing a total of 2,427,195 TEUs during this period. This figure marks an increase from 2,173,508 TEUs in the first half of 2024, reflecting an 11.7 percent growth, which underscores the efficiency of logistics operations and the ports’ capacity to meet rising demand.
Furthermore, the number of ships visiting Omani ports rose, totaling 6,586 vessels in the first half of 2025, compared to 5,930 during the same timeframe in 2024, signaling an increase of 11.1 percent. Key contributors to this growth included Sultan Qaboos Port, Shinas, and Salalah.
Bin Baqer also noted that the total volume of goods processed through Omani ports reached 70,114,527 tons، افزایش از 66,620,847 tons in the previous year, reflecting a 5.2 percent rise. Additionally, ports received 50,248 vehicles and imported 2,694,293 livestock, highlighting the diverse economic activities supported by these facilities.
To further develop port infrastructure, the Ministry has awarded consultancy services for the design and supervision of the Khor Jarama development project, aimed at enhancing site readiness and maritime utilization. The tender for the rehabilitation of Shannah and Masirah ports has also been awarded, focusing on the improvement of marine infrastructure, including docks, a breakwater, and the bridge connecting to the port. This project will involve eight months of studies and consultancy services to create a master plan and an integrated vision for ongoing development.
In addition, the Quadrilateral Marine Solutions and Systems Company, operator of Shinas Port, has signed a usufruct agreement to establish a marine fuel processing and storage center at the port, with backing from the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology.
