Renewable Energy Contribution Surpasses 11%: Implications for Investment Opportunities in Oman’s Growing Green Sector
مسقط: As of May this year, renewable energy accounts for 11.5% of electricity generation in Oman. This progress supports the country’s national strategy, which aims for 30% renewable energy by 2030 and 60% by 2040.
The General Directorate of Renewable Energy and Hydrogen, under the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, has noted significant advancements in Oman’s renewable energy landscape, primarily fueled by substantial solar and wind initiatives. Prominent projects include the Dhofar 1 Wind Power Plant, the Ibri 2 Solar Power Plant, and the Manah 1 and Manah 2 Solar Power Plants. These developments are critical to the national energy transition and enhance the role of renewable sources in electricity production.
Several new projects are expected to receive contract awards this year, including the Ibri 3 Solar Power Plant (500 MW), the Jaalan Bani Bu Ali Wind Power Plant (100 MW), and the Dhofar 2 Wind Power Plant (120 MW).
Looking ahead, additional initiatives are in the works, such as the Sadah Wind Power Plant (90 MW), Mahout 1 and Mahout 2 Wind Power Plants (300–400 MW each), the Al Kamil Solar Power Plant (280 MW), and another solar facility with a capacity of 220 MW.
These renewable energy projects are essential components of Oman’s economic diversification efforts and sustainable energy objectives. By expanding renewable energy across its regions, the country seeks to mitigate harmful emissions, protect the environment, and achieve a 30% share of electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030. — ONA
