MUSCAT: Oman’s plan to launch a regional airline by the end of this year promises to do more than simply expand air travel routes. According to an Omani communications and strategy expert, the initiative could enhance connectivity to underserved areas, stimulate new tourism demand, and contribute to the country’s broader economic diversification efforts.
This perspective comes in response to remarks made by Eng. Said bin Hamoud al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, during an interview with Al Wisal. He revealed that the new regional airline would operate within a radius of approximately 1,200 kilometers and could function under the existing brands of Oman Air or SalamAir.
Mohammed al Salmi, Founding Partner of The Story Teller, highlighted the economic and developmental potential of this initiative, especially if it strengthens links between regional airports and improves accessibility to emerging destinations. Enhanced air connectivity, he noted, would reduce reliance on lengthy road travel and support Oman’s objective to diversify its economy and distribute development more evenly across the Sultanate.
Al Salmi identified destinations such as Khasab, Al Jabal Al Akhdhar, Masirah, and Suhar as potential beneficiaries if included in the regional network. Easier access to these areas would likely increase attractiveness to both domestic and international tourists, boosting tourism expenditure, raising hotel occupancy rates, and aiding small and medium-sized enterprises in these governorates.
The proposal dovetails with Oman’s wider strategy to optimize transport infrastructure as a catalyst for tourism, investment, and regional development.
On the commercial viability of regional aviation in Oman, Al Salmi emphasized the importance of carefully selected routes underpinned by genuine demand. He also noted that, in geographically diverse countries such as Oman, regional air services are often valued not solely for immediate profitability but for their strategic role in enhancing mobility, connecting remote areas, and fostering local economic growth.
Operating the new carrier under an established airline like Oman Air or SalamAir could provide economic advantages by reducing startup costs and leveraging existing maintenance, infrastructure, and distribution systems. This approach could also expedite market entry and alleviate the initial operational pressures typical of a newly established standalone airline.
However, Al Salmi stressed that the success of the project hinges on effective execution. Key factors include choosing suitable aircraft, crafting efficient schedules, integrating regional routes with international networks, preparing airports to handle increased traffic, and strengthening tourism promotion for newly connected destinations.
He also pointed out the growing competition in the short-haul market, underscoring the need for a clear and disciplined business model that balances commercial objectives with the airline’s developmental mission.
