Impact of Indian Rupee’s Decline: What the RO241 per Omani Rial Rate Means for Your Business Investments in Oman
Indian Rupee Hits Record Low Amid Global Energy Supply Concerns
The Indian rupee fell to 93.71 per dollar for the first time on Friday, marking its most significant single-day decline in over four years. This drop comes amid rising concerns over disruptions in global energy supplies.
In Oman, Indian expatriates are facing challenges as exchange houses and banks remain closed for the Eid al-Fitr holidays and the weekend. Nevertheless, some online platforms, including local banking apps, are reporting rates of 241.42 and above per Omani rial.
R. Madhusoodanan, a financial expert based in Oman, noted, “If the conflict continues, the rupee may remain under pressure and could weaken further toward 245 per Omani rial. A rebound to levels around 230 appears unlikely in the near term.”
The rupee reached a record low of 93.76 against the US dollar before closing at 93.71، پایین از 92.63 the previous trading day. This sharp depreciation is largely attributed to rising crude oil prices, escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, and substantial outflows from Indian equities by foreign investors.
The rupee’s drop exceeded 1%, marking the steepest decline since late 2022, as reported by Reuters. Sustained pressure has built over recent months, exacerbated by delays in finalizing a trade agreement with the United States. The currency has depreciated more than 7% over the past year, making it one of the worst-performing currencies among its peers.
“As a major importer of crude oil, India is particularly vulnerable to surging energy prices. The price of crude oil has jumped sharply from about $73 per barrel in February 2026 to $107.8 in March, which is expected to widen the country’s current account deficit. India’s large import bill, encompassing oil, defense equipment, gold, and electronic goods, means that any rupee depreciation significantly impacts the balance of payments,” Madhusoodanan highlighted.
Additionally, supply chain disruptions, increased shipping costs, and higher insurance premiums are likely to further elevate fuel prices, which will contribute to inflationary pressures across the economy.
Impact on Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)
While Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) may see a benefit from the rupee’s depreciation—since their foreign earnings will translate into a higher value in rupee terms—the broader implications are mixed. Indian students studying abroad may face significantly increased expenses, as will those seeking medical treatment or overseas travel. Borrowers with loans in foreign currencies will also encounter higher repayment burdens.
Looking ahead, India still possesses strong potential as a preferred destination for foreign investment, which could aid in stabilizing its currency. Madhusoodanan emphasized the need to reduce dependence on imported energy and accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources to achieve long-term resilience and address external challenges.
Meanwhile, the dollar experienced a slight uptick on Friday but remains on track for a weekly decline, as soaring energy prices have altered the global interest rate outlook, leaving the US Federal Reserve as the only major central bank not expected to raise rates this year.
