GCC Committee Reviews Strategic Plan for Joint Statistics: Key Insights for Investors and Business Owners in the Region
MUSCAT: The Permanent Committee for Statistical Work of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) convened its 12th meeting on Thursday, September 4, in Al Jabal Al Akhdhar, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. Representatives from the national statistical agencies of all GCC member countries attended the session.
Hosted by the GCC Statistical Center, the meeting concentrated on enhancing regional cooperation in statistical activities and promoting data-driven policymaking. Delegates examined the preliminary draft of the Strategic Plan for Joint Statistical Work 2026–2030. This plan outlines a comprehensive framework aimed at advancing the GCC’s statistical system, fostering data integration, and utilizing statistics to support sustainable development efforts.
The committee underscored the strategic plan’s importance as a guiding framework for the forthcoming phase of GCC statistical collaboration. Discussions included a proposal to produce the first voluntary GCC report to track progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030.
The session also reviewed initiatives led by the GCC Statistical Center in key areas such as e-commerce, the digital economy, and tourism, culture, and heritage statistics. Delegates emphasized the need to assist national statistical agencies in providing accurate and up-to-date data to enhance the GCC tourism and cultural statistics platform.
Participants further deliberated on the creation of a GCC Environmental Performance Index, which will incorporate primary and secondary indicators collected by member states to ensure data uniformity. The committee approved the establishment of a regional working group on population estimates and projections to develop population models that reflect the social and economic diversity across the GCC.
In closing, attendees praised the GCC Statistical Center for its ongoing efforts to advance statistical work. They highlighted its technical programs, training workshops, publications, analytical reports, and proactive engagement at regional and international levels.
