‘Maal’ Platform Not Public Yet: What This Means for Investors and Businesses in Oman
Muscat: The Central Bank of Oman (CBO) has issued a clarification regarding circulating messages claiming that the local "Maal" card can be obtained through unauthorized individuals or entities.
The CBO stressed that the "Maal" card has not yet been launched in the local market. The official launch date will be announced publicly in due course. The card will be available exclusively through commercial banks and licensed payment service providers operating under the supervision of the Central Bank of Oman.
The CBO urged the public to exercise caution and refrain from responding to phone calls or messages from sources claiming to represent governmental or private entities, and warned against sharing any personal or financial information with such contacts.
The Central Bank has revealed the brand identity of the national payment card, which will be called “Maal.” Banks across the Sultanate are currently working on the project, which is expected to be launched in the coming months.
This initiative marks an important step toward achieving local self-sufficiency and advancing the development of the payment sector in Oman. The Maal card will be issued under the CBO’s supervision and is part of the expansion of the national payment systems network, Oman Net.

The upcoming launch of the Maal national payment card by licensed banks under the Central Bank of Oman represents a strategic move toward enhancing local payment self-sufficiency and strengthening Oman’s financial infrastructure. Businesses should prepare for a more secure and unified payment ecosystem, while entrepreneurs and investors can explore opportunities in fintech partnerships and secure payment solutions. However, vigilance is critical as there are risks of fraud and scams linked to unlicensed entities falsely claiming to offer the card before its official release.
