hydrates, potentially unlocking a transformative new energy source for the Sultanate if commercially viable reserves are discovered.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals signed a groundbreaking agreement with Victarens Global Energy for offshore Block 83 in the Sea of Oman. The pact was signed by Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, and Kenan Issa, CEO of Victarens Global Energy.<\/p>\n<p>This agreement represents Oman\u2019s inaugural effort to evaluate methane hydrate production using non-conventional methods.<\/p>\n<p>Methane hydrates, known as \u201cflammable ice,\u201d are crystalline structures where methane gas is trapped within water molecules under conditions of high pressure and low temperature. Globally, these deposits are believed to contain more energy than all conventional fossil fuel reserves combined, though commercial extraction remains largely experimental and technologically challenging.<\/p>\n<p>Block 83, located offshore along the Qurayyat coast in eastern Oman, is strategically important due to its deep-water environment, which is conducive to methane hydrate formation. Such reserves typically exist beneath the seabed in high-pressure, low-temperature geological settings.<\/p>\n<p>For Oman, methane hydrates offer promising long-term energy security prospects. If commercially extractable reserves are found, they could augment traditional natural gas supplies to meet growing domestic industrial and power demands. Additionally, methane from these hydrates could provide crucial feedstock for petrochemicals, fertilizers, LNG, and hydrogen production, supporting the nation\u2019s energy transition with a comparatively lower-emission fuel source.<\/p>\n<p>The development of methane hydrate technologies also aligns with Oman Vision 2040 by encouraging investments in research, engineering, offshore services, and energy infrastructure. With its extensive Arabian Sea coastline and deep-water offshore areas, Oman holds significant geological potential for future methane hydrate exploration as extraction technologies advance worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>In the project\u2019s initial phase, Victarens Global Energy will conduct geological studies, analyze and reprocess existing geophysical data, and perform new seismic surveys to assess the size and thickness of methane hydrate formations within Block 83. This phase is expected to involve an investment of approximately $20 million.<\/p>\n<p>Following these studies, a second phase will focus on installing extraction systems and evaluating the feasibility of commercial production, with an anticipated investment of around $200 million.<\/p>\n<p>If commercial production proves viable, the ministry and Victarens Global Energy will negotiate a
