Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP), through its Competition and Monopoly Prevention Centre, conducted a specialized two-day workshop aimed at reviewing the construction materials sector in Oman. This initiative was undertaken in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).<\/p>\n<p>The workshop gathered senior officials, experts, and representatives from various government and regulatory bodies to validate findings from an ongoing study of the sector and to formulate actionable recommendations that would enhance market efficiency and competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary findings indicate that the construction materials market in Oman is valued between <strong>$206 million and $300 million<\/strong>, with the architectural and decorative segment capturing <strong>85%<\/strong> of this market. Additionally, the cables and electrical wires segment shows significant manufacturing and export potential, with production exceeding <strong>120,000 tonnes<\/strong> and exports reaching over <strong>50 nations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed bin Salim al Rasbi, Director General of the Competition and Monopoly Prevention Centre at MoCIIP, remarked, \u201cThis workshop signifies an advanced phase following the completion of the initial stage of our comprehensive study, which focused on market structure analysis, competition dynamics, and identifying challenges that affect sector efficiency.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cWe are now entering the stage of practical validation and recommendation development through stakeholder engagement, ensuring alignment with market realities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Al Rasbi also noted that the cement and clinker market has a value of <strong>$465.5 million<\/strong>, with an anticipated annual growth rate of <strong>4.8%<\/strong> through 2029. Moreover, domestic iron and steel production reaches approximately <strong>3 million tonnes<\/strong> per year, primarily concentrated in the Suhar Industrial Complex.<\/p>\n<p>Khalid bin Khamis al Masroori, Director of the Prohibited Practices Department, emphasized, \u201cSafeguarding the market from monopolistic practices and fostering fair competition are crucial for sustainable economic growth. This study aims to enhance regulatory frameworks that offer equal opportunities and support local production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He underscored key competitive advantages in the sector, including integrated industrial complexes, accessibility to energy, and advanced port logistics services, alongside growth in the pipes and fittings segment driven by major gas and water infrastructure initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Zainab bint Ali al Rashdi, Head of the Competition Violations Department, stated, \u201cSub-market analysis reveals encouraging investment possibilities. We are committed to minimizing monopolistic practices and enforcing regulations to support a fair competitive landscape.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She added that future efforts include leveraging Omani ports, particularly Al Duqm, to develop a global green steel hub and expand low-clinker cement production while enhancing local value addition and the Omani quality mark.<\/p>\n<p>Nataly Khaled, Economic Affairs Officer and Project Coordinator at ESCWA, remarked, \u201cThis workshop represents a significant stage in a study started last year to evaluate the building materials market, its competitiveness, and its economic impact, especially within the construction sector.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She pointed out that global challenges, such as geopolitical tensions, energy price variations, and supply chain disruptions, highlight the necessity to bolster the sector\u2019s resilience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are presenting preliminary findings that assess regulatory, institutional, and legal frameworks, alongside international benchmarking and competitiveness analysis of key materials like cement, steel, ceramics, and paints,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop also explored investment opportunities stemming from major urban expansion and strategic development projects, aligned with Oman Vision 2040. Demand is being driven by large-scale initiatives, including smart cities like Sultan Haitham City, as well as developments in ports, railways, and renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>The event will conclude with the preparation of a final report that outlines critical findings and recommendations to improve the investment environment and reinforce fair competition in the
