Expansion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week, Google and Amazon reported significant increases in their greenhouse gas emissions, a development attributed to the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure. This surge moves the companies further away from their commitments to carbon neutrality.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Google revealed that its total emissions have soared <strong>82% since 2019<\/strong>, with an increase of more than <strong>18% in the past year<\/strong>, despite pledging to cut these emissions in half by <strong>2030<\/strong>. Meanwhile, Amazon reported on Wednesday that its emissions have risen <strong>58% over the same timeframe<\/strong>, with a more than <strong>16% increase last year<\/strong>, even as it aims for carbon neutrality by <strong>2040<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, both companies are now generating more pollution for every dollar of revenue, indicating that emissions are outpacing sales\u2014an unprecedented trend for Amazon since at least <strong>2021<\/strong>. &#8220;Our AI infrastructure buildout is currently accelerating faster than the grid is decarbonizing,&#8221; stated Kate Brandt, Google&#8217;s chief sustainability officer, in a blog post accompanying the company&#8217;s annual environmental report. This concern extends to the entire tech sector, with major players like Meta and Microsoft expected to release similar reports soon.<\/p>\n<p>The competitive push in AI, which gained momentum following the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, has led tech giants to exponentially increase data center constructions\u2014facilities that demand vast amounts of electricity, water for cooling, and materials such as concrete and steel. Google\u2019s electricity usage has doubled in three years, approaching levels comparable to countries like Greece, while Amazon&#8217;s emissions related to data center construction have surged by over <strong>40% in just one year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In their extensive annual reports, both companies highlight their sustainability efforts. Google claimed to have entered into record agreements for &#8220;clean&#8221; electricity last year and is investing in nuclear and geothermal options.
