Oman Strengthens Intellectual Property Protection: Key Implications for Innovators and Investors

MUSCAT: Oman’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion has emphasized the importance of intellectual property (IP) in fostering economic and scientific development. Protecting IP rights is deemed essential for promoting innovation and increasing the competitiveness of the national economy, in alignment with Oman Vision 2040.

Between 2024 and the first half of 2025, the National Intellectual Property Office recorded significant growth in IP registrations: 1,253 patent applications, 19,884 trademark applications, 48 industrial design applications, and 246 copyright filings. This surge indicates a heightened awareness of the critical role of IP in protecting rights and bolstering the business ecosystem.

The increase in registrations can be attributed to improved digital services, regulatory reforms, and targeted awareness campaigns. The patent applications span vital sectors, including renewable energy, green hydrogen, artificial intelligence, robotics, and pharmaceuticals, reflecting the nation’s innovation priorities.

Eng Amjad bin Yasser al Zakwani, a patent examiner, commented on the rapid growth of the innovation culture in Oman, urging inventors to file their ideas through digital platforms to secure economic value and legal protection.

He also highlighted the Ministry’s initiatives to foster public-private partnerships, expand awareness programs, and provide incentives aimed at strengthening Oman’s innovation ecosystem. — ONA
