Major Fabrication Facility by Egyptian Steel Firm in Duqm: What It Means for Investment Opportunities in Oman
FMC-Ferrometalco Advances Steel Fabrication Sector in Duqm
FMC-Ferrometalco, a prominent Egyptian steel fabrication and construction firm, has entered into an agreement to establish a significant facility dedicated to the fabrication of steel structures at the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD).
This initiative is part of a broader portfolio of investments collectively valued at approximately $7.5 billion, as announced earlier this week by the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ). These investments will span various sectors, including clean energy, electric mobility, industrial supply chains, tourism, construction, and power infrastructure.
FMC-Ferrometalco indicated that its Oman-based venture, DSD Ferrometalco Steel Construction, will spearhead the development of a large-scale steel fabrication complex capable of producing 25,000 metric tonnes of steel structures annually. The company views this investment as a pivotal move towards establishing world-class steel manufacturing capabilities in one of the Middle East’s most strategically significant industrial hubs.
In a statement, the company highlighted, “Duqm’s unique positioning, infrastructure, and investment-friendly environment make it the ideal home for our new manufacturing facility. We are excited to contribute to Oman Vision 2040 by driving local industrialization, creating quality jobs, and delivering high-grade steel structures to regional and global markets.”
Founded in 1979, FMC-Ferrometalco offers comprehensive engineering, procurement, manufacturing, and construction (EPMC) services for major projects in the industrial, energy, infrastructure, and renewable energy sectors across the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. With an annual production capacity of around 134,000 tonnes and manufacturing facilities located in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, the company specializes in structural steel, heavy fabrication, storage tanks, pressure vessels, and complex industrial installations.
FMC-Ferrometalco has also forged strategic partnerships with leading international steel firms, including Al Kaabi Steel and Steel Holding AG, along with collaborations with globally recognized industry players such as DSD Steel Group.
According to the company, the Duqm project represents a vital opportunity to expand its regional presence while supporting the development of large-scale industrial, energy, and infrastructure projects in Oman and the broader Gulf region. The strategic location within SEZAD provides several advantages, including direct access to Gulf and international markets via the Port of Duqm, a competitive operating environment bolstered by special economic zone incentives, and proximity to a growing cluster of industrial and energy-related investments.
