National Ferries Transport Over 250,000 Passengers in 2025: Implications for Oman’s Tourism and Transportation Sector Growth
المسكات عنب طيب الشذا: The National Ferries Company (NFC), Oman’s primary maritime transport operator, reported that it served over 250,000 passengers in 2025, which averages to approximately 690 passengers per day. This statistic is part of the company’s latest operational report.
In addition to passenger transport, NFC facilitated the movement of more than 64,000 vehicles and handled over 27,000 tonnes of cargo throughout the year. This data highlights NFC’s expanding role in enhancing mobility, trade, and tourism within the Sultanate of Oman.
NFC operates a fleet comprising five passenger and vehicle ferries, alongside a dedicated cargo and landing vessel, which connect coastal and island communities. These services are crucial for linking mainland Oman with significant island destinations, thereby streamlining the transportation of passengers, vehicles, and commercial goods.
The maritime operator emphasizes its contributions to economic development through improved connectivity among governorates and islands, which bolsters tourism, enables trade, and creates job opportunities. Notably, NFC boasts an Omanisation rate of 97%, reflecting its commitment to fostering national talent in the maritime industry.
Beyond regular passenger services, NFC also offers commercial cargo transport and logistical support for projects in remote areas. Special tourism and exploratory cruises are available, allowing visitors to experience Oman’s coastal and marine attractions.
Passenger demand typically surges during Musandam’s winter tourism season from November to February, as well as during summer holidays and Masirah Island’s camping and turtle-nesting season, which extends from April to October.
As part of its growth strategy, NFC is embarking on several initiatives aimed at improving service quality and operational efficiency. This includes refurbishing and upgrading existing vessels, as well as constructing a new passenger and vehicle ferry at Asyad Drydock. These investments are expected to foster future growth, enhance service reliability, and improve the overall travel experience for customers. — ONA
