MUSCAT, SEPTEMBER 23 – The agri-tourism development company Janaen, a subsidiary of the Omran Group, has formed a strategic partnership with Oman Agriculture Development to oversee agricultural projects for the ambitious Janaen Salalah Project. This agreement is a significant milestone in the utilization of Dhofar Governorate’s natural resources and aims to enhance Oman’s profile as a unique agri-tourism destination.
Janaen Salalah is an innovative project that merges extensive agricultural operations with tourism experiences, creating a distinctive model that harmonizes farming, tourism, and economic development.
Covering over 786,000 square meters in Salalah, the agricultural component will include the cultivation of around 16,730 coconut trees, 1,000 papaya trees, and 625 cashew trees, marking the first commercial cultivation of cashews in Oman. The initiative also features a variety of supporting initiatives focused on water sustainability and the development of modern agricultural infrastructure, including advanced irrigation systems and sustainable facilities.
Hashil bin Obaid al Mahrouqi, Chairman of the Board of Managers at Janaen, stated: “This project showcases an innovative model of cross-sector integration, reflecting our collective vision to leverage Oman’s natural resources and translate them into new tourism concepts such as agri-tourism. The initiative promotes the sustainable use of resources and adds value to the Omani economy.”
Ali bin Said al Uraimi, Chief Executive Officer of Oman Agriculture Development, emphasized the importance of enhancing food security through initiatives that diversify agricultural production and promote high-value crops. He noted, “Our collaboration with Janaen allows us to leverage our expertise in sustainable farming practices to ensure efficient resource use while introducing new crops, such as cashew, on a commercial scale for the first time in Oman. This project also underscores the role of modern agriculture in driving economic growth, job creation, and the development of value chains.”
As a flagship initiative, Janaen Salalah seeks to establish Dhofar Governorate as a hub for both agriculture and tourism. In addition to providing high-quality agricultural products, the project will offer engaging visitor experiences that blend education and recreation, from exploring modern farming techniques to enjoying family-friendly activities within a picturesque natural environment.
The project is anticipated to yield significant economic benefits by creating job opportunities and enabling small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs to engage in agricultural and tourism value chains. The large-scale production of coconuts, papayas, and cashews will further bolster Oman’s food security efforts while enhancing the Sultanate’s appeal as an agri-tourism destination.
