Floating Solar Energy Project in Oman: What This JV Means for Investment Opportunities in the Renewable Sector
المسكات عنب طيب الشذا: A new investment platform designed to integrate desalination, renewable energy, battery storage, and green hydrogen infrastructure has been launched in Oman. This initiative follows the signing of a joint venture agreement between Shadid Capital, a regional investment and advisory firm, and a consortium of strategic partners.
The platform, named the Oman Blue Infrastructure Platform (OBIP), aims to develop scalable infrastructure projects that enhance water security, accelerate Oman’s energy transition, and support industrial growth, aligning with the goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040.
Dr. Nawar Boussaid, Chief Executive Officer of Shadid Capital, announced the agreement and emphasized its significance in establishing sustainable infrastructure through strategic partnerships. “This initiative represents a shared vision to advance sustainable infrastructure,” Dr. Boussaid stated, highlighting the platform’s integration of floating solar-powered desalination, floating solar photovoltaic (PV) generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), green hydrogen production, industrial water infrastructure, and broader blue economy solutions.
Details released by the partners indicate that the initial phase of the OBIP will be located in Sohar. It plans to feature a desalination capacity of 100,000 cubic meters per day, supported by 250 MW of floating solar PV, 100 MWh of battery energy storage, and a 50 MW green hydrogen electrolyzer. Additionally, the platform aims to supply water to industrial users and port facilities, providing a model that can be replicated across the Middle East and Africa.
This initiative embodies a systems-based approach, merging renewable power generation with water production, energy storage, and hydrogen manufacturing into a single integrated infrastructure platform. This strategy is expected to minimize land requirements through floating solar installations while enhancing renewable energy utilization and ensuring reliable supplies of both electricity and desalinated water for industrial clients.
Shadid Capital specializes in infrastructure and energy projects throughout Africa and the MENA region. The company stated that the platform will unite technology providers, engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors, financial institutions, investors, and energy firms to expedite project delivery.
