Security Risks in the Strait of Hormuz: What CMA CGM Vessel Attack Means for Global Shipping and Trade Investors
French shipping giant CMA CGM announced on Wednesday that its vessel, the San Antonio, was attacked while navigating the Strait of Hormuz. The assault caused injuries to several crew members and inflicted damage on the ship.
The incident took place on Tuesday and marks the latest disruption in this vital maritime corridor amid escalating conflict in the Middle East. The ongoing war has effectively halted about 20% of global oil trade and left hundreds of vessels stranded.
Following the attack, CMA CGM confirmed that the injured crew were evacuated and are currently receiving medical care. The company refrained from providing further details about the incident.
This is not the first time CMA CGM has faced challenges in the region. Last month, one of its ships came under warning shots in the Strait of Hormuz, though no injuries occurred. The French shipping firm, ranked as the world’s third-largest container carrier, reported that 14 of its vessels were stranded in the Gulf at the onset of the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. The CMA CGM Kribi was among the first to exit the strait at the beginning of April.
According to shipping records, the Maltese-flagged San Antonio was en route to Mundra, India, at the time of the attack.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday a temporary pause in a naval operation designed to escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, citing “great progress” toward a comprehensive agreement with Iran.
