Opinion Polls Launched to Gauge Awareness of Local Content: What It Means for Businesses and Investors in Oman

MUSCAT: The National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), in collaboration with the Authority for Projects, Tenders and Local Content, is set to launch two public opinion polls today, Sunday, titled “Measuring Community Awareness of Local Content.”

The surveys will target two distinct groups: the general public and employees working in both public and private sector institutions. This effort is part of broader national initiatives aimed at enhancing in-country value and supporting the economic and social objectives outlined in Oman Vision 2040.

Scheduled to run until August 27, the polls seek to evaluate public awareness of the local content concept, gauge the level of engagement with policies promoting local products and services, and understand the factors that influence preferences for locally made goods. Additionally, the surveys will identify challenges faced by individuals and organizations in adopting local content strategies.

The first poll will involve Omani citizens and residents aged 18 and older. It will assess awareness of key concepts such as employing the national workforce, utilizing local goods and services, knowledge transfer, and investing in national assets. The survey will also explore preferences for Omani products, sources of information about local content, and the willingness to pay a premium for locally produced goods of comparable quality.

The second poll targets Omani employees in supply, manufacturing, distribution, and commercial marketing sectors. It will evaluate the application of local content policies within their organizations, purchasing priorities, challenges in dealing with small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and the benefits of local content at institutional and sales levels.

Mahfouz bin Salem al Musharfi, Director of the Public Opinion Measurement Department at NCSI, emphasized that the surveys will provide decision-makers with accurate data reflecting the realities and challenges of local content adoption across both individual and institutional spheres in Oman.

He added that the results will support efforts to strengthen economic empowerment, promote national consumption, and enhance the role of SMEs in supply chains. This aligns with the goals of Oman Vision 2040 to build a sustainable and diversified economy. The findings are expected to offer precise indicators that will guide the formulation of national initiatives and inform policies and investments aimed at leveraging Omani human and institutional capabilities. — ONA

The launch of these public opinion polls marks a strategic move to deepen understanding and support for local content policies, aligning directly with Oman Vision 2040’s goals for economic diversification and empowerment. For businesses, this presents a prime opportunity to align operations with national priorities, enhancing competitiveness via stronger local supply chains and workforce integration. Smart investors and entrepreneurs should now focus on leveraging insights from these findings to identify gaps and tailor offerings that boost local engagement and sustainability, while mitigating risks tied to low awareness or adoption of local content practices.
