Ooredoo Launches New Submarine Cable Landing Station: What It Means for Business Connectivity and Growth in Oman

Muscat – Ooredoo has officially launched the Salalah Data Centre and submarine cable landing station, a strategic development poised to establish Oman as a key digital hub in the region.

Situated in Salalah, the facility leverages the city’s strategic location near multiple international subsea cable systems, connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa. This makes Salalah an emerging critical point for global digital connectivity.

The new establishment is the first in southern Oman to integrate a Class 3 compliant data centre with a submarine cable landing station. Designed to support advanced cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and edge computing services, the centre initially offers space for 125 full server racks, with plans to expand capacity to 500 racks in future phases. This sets a new standard for digital infrastructure within the country.

Saed Al Ghafri, Director of Infrastructure at Ooredoo, highlighted the project’s significance: “The Salalah Data Centre and Landing Station is a catalyst for Oman’s digital future. It strengthens our role in economic diversification, attracts global digital investment, and facilitates the next wave of cloud and AI innovation. By establishing a southern gateway for international connectivity, we reinforce Oman’s leadership in the regional digital economy and drive long-term value for businesses, communities, and the broader region.”

The project enhances network resilience by creating a secure entry point for international cables in southern Oman. It reduces latency and offers faster, more reliable connectivity. The initiative is expected to draw global operators, hyperscalers, and cloud service providers to Oman, boosting the local economy and generating employment opportunities.

The advanced facility supports a broad spectrum of digital needs—from enterprise IT hosting to cutting-edge digital services—providing businesses and governments in the region with faster, more secure, and locally hosted cloud and content delivery solutions.
