Oman's Cultural Visa: Who Can Apply, Cost and Validity
Since November 2025 Oman has a cultural visa for artists, researchers and others invited by a cultural host. It costs OMR 50 a year and needs a sponsoring institution.

Oman added a cultural visa in November 2025 for foreigners who come for cultural reasons at the invitation of an Omani host. It is not a tourist visa and you cannot buy it on your own: a host institution has to ask for it and take responsibility for you. We last checked on 6 November 2026 and found no later change to the terms, but the Royal Oman Police (ROP) eVisa portal we opened lists only tourist, work and residency services, so confirm the application route with your host.
Who it is for
The ROP described the visa as an entry permit for people coming to Oman for cultural activities such as:
- temporary residence for cultural exchange or artistic training
- academic or research collaboration in culture, arts or heritage
- taking part in literary and intellectual conferences or festivals
- attending or organising cultural and artistic events and exhibitions
The host can be the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, an academic institution or a cultural centre. One outlet lists writers, performers, designers, researchers, musicians, curators and academics as typical applicants.
Cost and validity
| | Details | |---|---| | Durations | One, five or ten years | | Fee | OMR 50 for one year, or OMR 50 per year for the longer terms | | Use window | Must be used within three months of issue or it lapses |
So a ten-year visa works out at OMR 500 at the stated yearly rate. The ROP also said these rules apply to the cultural visa only, and that the extension provisions of the Foreigners' Residence Law regulations for other visas do not carry over.
Family members
A cultural joining visa lets a spouse or a first-degree relative accompany you. Fees for family members are not clear. VisaVerge reports OMR 10 for a one-year joining visa and OMR 50 per year for five or ten years, but the Observer and Gulf News summaries of the ROP framework do not state any family fee. Ask your host institution to confirm before you budget.
What we could not confirm
- The exact application form or portal. One report expects the process to follow the ROP's normal visa procedures, with sponsor-backed applications and a residence card issued after arrival.
- The fine print on conditions, such as security checks or when the residence card is issued. The reports we saw do not spell these out.
Practical advice
If you are an artist or researcher, start with the organisation that wants to host you and ask it to confirm the visa category, the term and who pays the fee. For other routes into Oman, compare the Oman visa guide and our visa services.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for the cultural visa on my own?
No. It is issued at the request of a hosting body, such as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, an academic institution or a cultural centre, which is responsible for you during your stay.
How much does it cost?
OMR 50 for one year, or OMR 50 per year for a five or ten year visa, according to the ROP details reported by the Observer.
Can my family join me?
Yes. A cultural joining visa exists for the spouse or first-degree relatives. One outlet reports family fees of OMR 10 for a one-year visa and OMR 50 a year for longer ones, but the ROP summary we saw did not state them.
How long do I have to use the visa?
Three months from issue. If you do not use it in that time it becomes invalid.
