Oman Car Window Tint Rules: Up to 50% Allowed Except the Windscreen

In July 2026 the Royal Oman Police said vehicle owners may tint all windows except the front windscreen, up to 50 percent. What is allowed, what the reports leave unclear, and what to ask a fitter.

The Royal Oman Police (ROP) said on 4 July 2026 that vehicle owners can tint every window except the front windscreen, with a maximum of 50 percent on the side and rear windows. The windscreen must stay completely untinted. We last checked on 6 November 2026 and found no later change.

The rules as announced

| Item | What the ROP said | |---|---| | Front windscreen | No tint at all | | Side and rear windows | Tint allowed up to 50 percent | | Factory-tinted glass | Can be licensed if it lets through at least 30 percent of visible light | | Matte paint protection films or wraps | Allowed if they keep a glossy finish and meet the prescribed standards |

Gulf News adds that visibility and safety restrictions still apply.

New rule or reminder?

Sources describe it differently. The Observer and Gulf News report it as updated regulations and a new allowance. Times of Oman instead says the ROP issued a public advisory restating its limits in response to road users' suggestions. Both versions lead to the same practical rule. We did not find the ROP's own notice, and we did not confirm what the limit was before July 2026, so if your car already has tint, check with the ROP that it passes inspection.

What the reports do not tell you

  • How 50 percent is measured. None of the three reports we read says whether it means 50 percent of light blocked or 50 percent let through. This matters, because a film that lets through only 30 percent is much darker than one that lets through 50 percent. Ask the ROP, or ask the fitter to give you the film's visible light transmission figure in writing.
  • Which vehicles. The announcement speaks of vehicles in general. An older Observer headline says taxis and driving-instruction cars may tint up to 30 percent, but we did not open that article or confirm its date, so ask the ROP if you drive for a living.
  • Penalties. The reports we read do not mention fines or what happens to non-compliant tint.

Practical advice

  1. Choose a fitter who will state the film's light transmission value on the invoice.
  2. Keep the front windscreen completely clear.
  3. If your car already has tint, get its light transmission measured or documented before the next inspection.
  4. Keep receipts, so you can show what was fitted if anyone questions it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I tint my front windscreen?

No. All reports say the front windscreen must stay untinted.

What does 50 percent mean, light blocked or light passed?

The reports do not say. The only figure given with a clear definition is the factory glass threshold of at least 30 percent visible light transmission. Ask the ROP or your fitter how the 50 percent is measured before you pay.

Can I keep factory-tinted side windows?

Yes. Vehicles with factory coloured glass can be licensed if the glass lets through at least 30 percent of visible light.

Are matte wraps allowed?

Matte paint protection films or wraps are allowed if they keep a glossy finish and meet the prescribed standards, according to the ROP announcement as reported.
