New Initiative Integrates Solar Energy into Agricultural Projects: What It Means for Investors and Entrepreneurs in Oman
Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MoAFWR), in collaboration with Nafath Energy Company and the Development Bank, has launched the ‘Solar Energy — Sustainable Harvest’ initiative to integrate solar energy into agricultural projects. This effort aims to reduce electricity costs for farmers and investors while promoting renewable energy in the agricultural sector.
The initiative offers financing of up to RO 15,000, including interest-free loans for full-time farmers and loans with 3% interest for part-time farmers. It also provides a grace period of up to one year and flexible repayment terms of up to seven years.
Mohsin Al Mufargi, Renewable Energy Engineer at MoAFWR, told Oman Observer that the program is designed to help farmers and investors install solar energy systems. The goal is to reduce electricity bills by up to 30% and support sustainable agricultural production across Oman.
The Ministry highlighted that this initiative aligns with Oman’s vision for sustainable development by encouraging farmers to adopt solar technologies. This adoption will enhance production efficiency, lower operating costs, and contribute to the sustainable use of natural resources while fostering innovation in agriculture.
Farmers are encouraged to register and take advantage of the benefits offered through the initiative, which is accessible via the “Tharawat” platform. Eligible applicants must have registered agricultural land, an official electricity meter, and high electricity consumption during summer months.
The eligibility criteria include ownership or usufruct rights over registered agricultural land with a valid agricultural meter, submission of ownership documents and survey maps, and registration of the agricultural holding with the agricultural association. Additionally, there must be at least 100 square meters of open, shade-free space available for solar panel installation.
Priority will be given to farms producing vegetables and fruits involved in food security projects, those with greenhouses, utilizing modern irrigation systems, and directly contributing to food security efforts.
This initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing agricultural sustainability and achieving both economic and environmental benefits for farmers in Oman.
