Surge in Drowning Cases in Oman 2024: Implications for Tourism and Water Safety Businesses
Muscat – The Sultanate experienced a staggering rise in drowning-related incidents in 2024, with a total of 639 accidents reported, compared to just 166 in 2023, according to the Civil Defense and Ambulance Authority (CDAA).
This sharp increase of 473 incidents predominantly occurred in wadis, the sea, dams, ponds, wells, open water tanks, and flowing streams during rainfall. The CDAA noted that many of these accidents were particularly prevalent in wadis, where visitors often lack essential swimming skills.
Drowning incidents are most common during the summer months, as people flock to wadis and beaches in search of relief from high temperatures. The risk is especially pronounced for both adults and children who are not proficient in swimming.
Factors contributing to these incidents include inadequate supervision of children during outings to these water bodies and a general disregard for warning regulations that prohibit swimming in dangerous areas. Additionally, many individuals attempt to cross wadis without considering the strength of the currents.
The CDAA emphasizes the importance of adhering to safety protocols, such as swimming only in designated areas that are properly equipped. They recommend the installation of fixed support structures around swimming pools, the provision of lifebuoys and swimming vests, and caution against overfilling children’s pools.
In case of an emergency, individuals are urged to call the emergency number 9999 or contact the CDAA’s operations center at 24343666.
