Early Rains Mark Start of Dhofar’s Khareef Season: Business and Investment Opportunities in Oman’s Key Tourism Sector

Early Rains Mark Start of Dhofar’s Khareef Season: Business and Investment Opportunities in Oman’s Key Tourism Sector

Salalah, June 18 — While much of the Arabian Peninsula endures intense summer heat, the southern Omani governorate of Dhofar is experiencing a strikingly different climate. Light rains, mist-covered mountains, and temperatures in the low 20s Celsius have been observed ahead of the official start of the Khareef Dhofar Season this Saturday.

Since Tuesday evening, several highland areas—including the outskirts of Salalah, Qairoon Hiriti, and Dhalkout—have seen light drizzle and cooler temperatures, accompanied by thick clouds rolling over the mountains. Temperatures in Qairoon Hiriti have dropped to 23°C, while coastal areas such as Salalah, Taqah, and Sadah are reporting temperatures between 28°C and 32°C, according to the latest weather bulletin from the Civil Aviation Authority.

The forecast predicts ongoing scattered rainfall and low cloud cover along the Dhofar coast and its mountainous regions, driven by moderate to strong winds and humidity levels reaching up to 100% in coastal zones. Sea conditions are expected to be rough, particularly along the southern shores.

Dhofar’s distinctive summer microclimate, known as Khareef, is caused by monsoon winds from the Indian Ocean. From late June to early September, this phenomenon transforms the governorate into a lush, green landscape with cool temperatures, mist, and flowing springs, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors from Oman and abroad.

The Dhofar Municipality has announced that the 2025 Khareef season will officially commence next week, with an anticipated 10–15% increase in visitor numbers compared to last year. This year’s season features upgraded tourism zones, expanded cultural programs, and enhanced support for Omani small businesses and artisans, in line with Oman Vision 2040’s objectives for sustainable tourism and local economic growth.

With early rains already blessing the mountains, tourism operators, local authorities, and service providers are collaborating closely to ensure a safe and smooth experience for visitors. Key destinations such as Ateen Plain, Al Haffa, Mirbat, and Taqah are being prepared with improved infrastructure, public amenities, and a vibrant calendar of events throughout the season.

The early onset of the Khareef season in Dhofar, with its unique microclimate and rising visitor numbers, presents significant growth opportunities for Oman’s tourism sector, especially in eco-tourism and cultural experiences. Businesses should capitalize on the upgraded infrastructure and expanded programming to attract both domestic and international tourists, while smart investors could consider ventures that support sustainable tourism and local artisan markets in line with Oman Vision 2040. However, they must also prepare for the operational risks posed by rough sea conditions and high humidity during the season.
