Sembcorp’s 1.1 GW Energy Expansion: What It Means for Investment and Business Growth in Oman
MUSCAT: Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries has established itself as a key player in Oman’s power and water sector, with a diversified portfolio exceeding 1.1 gigawatts of energy assets across gas-fired generation, desalination, solar, and wind. This expansion aligns with Oman’s goal to balance energy security and sustainability under Oman Vision 2040.
Sembcorp entered the Omani market in 2012 through the Salalah Independent Water and Power Plant (IWPP) in Dhofar Governorate. The facility is among the largest and most energy-efficient in the region, boasting a gross capacity of 518 MW of gas-fired power and producing 72,950 cubic meters of desalinated water daily. It supplies essential electricity and water to southern communities while supporting industrial and economic activities.
On its operations in Oman, Sembcorp stated: “From powering essential services to entering renewables, our journey in Oman reflects our commitment to Oman Vision 2040 and a sustainable energy future.” This underscores the company’s strategy to evolve alongside the nation’s development priorities.
A significant milestone was reached in 2024 with the commissioning of the Manah II Solar Independent Power Project. With a capacity of 588 MWp, Manah II is Sembcorp’s first solar project in Oman and its largest utility-scale solar farm globally. The project will generate clean electricity for over 60,000 households and reduce carbon emissions by nearly 720,000 tonnes annually, contributing substantially to Oman’s renewable energy goals.
Sembcorp is also advancing in wind energy with the Dhofar II Wind Power Project, a 125 MW initiative slated to begin commercial operations in the third quarter of 2027. Once operational, it is expected to cut around 158,000 tonnes of carbon emissions yearly and save approximately 76 million cubic meters of natural gas, further supporting Oman’s clean energy transition.
Collectively, Sembcorp’s assets in Oman—spanning gas, solar, and wind—provide reliable power and water while driving the country’s shift toward cleaner energy. With over 1.1 GW of capacity in operation and development, Sembcorp is firmly positioning itself as a long-term partner in Oman’s energy transformation, blending infrastructure reliability with large-scale renewable solutions.
