GCCIA’s Participation in Arab League Power Experts Meeting: Implications for Energy Collaboration in Oman
CAIRO: The Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) participated in the 16th meeting of the Arab League’s Committee of Electricity Experts held in Cairo on August 27–28, 2025. This gathering reflects the dedication of Arab nations to enhance cross-border electricity connections and bolster grid security.
The committee, functioning under the Arab League’s Energy Department, focuses on reviewing collaborative projects, integrating renewable energy sources, and utilizing nuclear power, all while promoting electricity trade and ensuring grid reliability among member states.
GCCIA Chief Executive Ahmed bin Ali al Ebrahim stated that the authority has "proven its efficiency" in managing the Gulf power grid and is now entering a new phase of expansion. He highlighted the Al Wafra station in Kuwait, the first and largest expansion project of the GCC grid, which will also connect to southern Iraq. “This project opens the door for broader economic and strategic integration between the Gulf and Iraq, eventually linking to power systems in Europe, Africa, and Asia,” he remarked.
Founded in 2001, the GCCIA establishes a high-voltage grid connecting six GCC states, enabling electricity sharing and emergency assistance. It is regarded as a model for regional cooperation in energy security.
Nasser al Shahrani, Deputy CEO for Operations, described the Arab League forum as an “important platform” for sharing expertise and fostering new connections. He noted that these initiatives enhance Arab energy security, position the region as a global hub for electricity trade, and cultivate economic and environmental cooperation.
In response to increasing energy demand, alongside the need to reduce carbon emissions and integrate renewable energy, Arab governments are intensifying grid interconnection efforts. The GCCIA’s involvement underscores its strategic partnership with the Arab League in creating a more secure and sustainable energy framework for the region.
