Oman Flour Mills Welcomes First Electric Locomotive: Implications for the Future of Transportation in Oman’s Supply Chain
Muscat — Oman Flour Mills (OFM) has proudly unveiled its first electric locomotive, marking a pioneering advancement in the Sultanate of Oman. This initiative is in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, as well as the Royal Oman Police. The introduction of this electric locomotive aims to enhance the competitiveness of national industries, bolster the food security sector, and promote increased local value.
By deploying this electric locomotive, Oman Flour Mills is taking a significant step towards integrating advanced industrial technologies. The company seeks to improve operational efficiency, decrease environmental pollution and carbon emissions, minimize workplace noise, and reduce operating and maintenance costs by an impressive 59%.
Waleed bin Said Al Salmi, Transport and Logistics Operations Manager at Oman Flour Mills, stated, “The electric locomotive aligns with Oman’s ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, reflecting our commitment to Oman Vision 2040 and the Sustainable Development Goals. Initially, it will be used for transporting raw materials from grain silos to production facilities.”
Al Salmi shared that the locomotive boasts a towing capacity of up to 60 tonnes, a range of 190 kilometres, and a battery capacity of 423 kilowatts, with a charging time of only 1.5 hours. He emphasized its numerous benefits, including being environmentally friendly, which will not only enhance air quality but also reduce noise pollution and lower operating costs compared to traditional equipment.
He concluded by highlighting that the company is strategically advancing towards a sustainable energy transition by implementing impactful projects that utilize clean natural resources, guided by a clear vision and supported by governmental entities, particularly the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion.
