Oman at Global Intellectual Property Summit: Implications for Investors and Business Owners

Geneva: The Sultanate of Oman is participating in the 66th session of the Assemblies of Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland, which will continue until July 17, 2025.

The Omani delegation is led by Dr. Saleh Said Masan, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion for Commerce and Industry. In his address during the event, Dr. Saleh emphasized Oman’s ongoing efforts to develop a comprehensive intellectual property system. This initiative includes enhancing digital infrastructure, modernizing legislative frameworks, building the capacities of national personnel, and increasing public awareness around intellectual property culture. He underlined that these efforts are grounded in the belief that intellectual property is a crucial pillar for fostering a knowledge-based economy and spurring innovation.

Dr. Saleh also highlighted the significant advancements Oman has made in strengthening its collaboration with WIPO. This progress is evident in Oman’s accession to numerous international agreements concerning intellectual property and the initiation of key projects. Notably, Oman has provided support to Omani frankincense producers, which includes training in the basics and management of intellectual property, as well as improving both local and international marketing through the use of intellectual property systems as geographical indicators.

He commended the partnership with WIPO in executing the National Intellectual Property Strategy project, aimed at developing a sustainable national intellectual property system. This framework is intended to protect innovations, boost the competitiveness of Oman’s economy, and nurture an intellectual property culture.

Furthermore, Dr. Saleh explained that WIPO experts have collaborated closely with Omani authorities to tailor the Omani version of the “Distance Learning Programme for Intellectual Property Fundamentals (DL101),” ensuring its alignment with national laws and cultural contexts. The organization has also provided technical guidance on legislative updates and best practices for intellectual property.

In conclusion, Dr. Saleh reaffirmed Oman’s commitment to supporting WIPO’s initiatives and expressed the country’s dedication to collaborative efforts aimed at fostering a more equitable, inclusive, and effective global intellectual property system. He emphasized that this system should reflect the aspirations of WIPO member states for sustainable development and the protection of innovation.

Oman’s participation in the 66th session of WIPO underscores a strategic pivot towards a knowledge-based economy, presenting significant opportunities for businesses in sectors reliant on intellectual property. Investors and entrepreneurs should leverage the enhanced IP infrastructure and training initiatives to innovate and protect unique products, particularly in traditional sectors like Omani frankincense, which could gain international traction as a marked geographical indicator. As Oman strengthens its commitment to global IP standards, businesses must remain vigilant to the risks of potential competition and regulatory changes that may arise in this evolving landscape.
