US Spirit Airlines Files for Bankruptcy Again: Implications for Investors and the Aviation Market
New York – Budget airline Spirit Airlines announced on Friday that it will file for bankruptcy for the second time within a year. Despite this move, the Florida-based carrier plans to continue operating flights and selling tickets.
Spirit first went into bankruptcy in November, subsequently completing a restructuring agreement with creditors in March that reduced its debt by nearly $800 million.
In its latest bankruptcy filing, the airline expressed intentions to enhance its network, optimize its fleet, and pursue further cost efficiencies. "The Chapter 11 process will provide Spirit the tools, time, and flexibility to continue ongoing discussions with all of its lessors, financial creditors, and other parties to implement a financial and operational transformation of the company," Spirit stated.
In April, Ted Christie was replaced as CEO by Dave Davis, who previously served at Sun Country Airlines. "As we move forward, guests can continue to rely on Spirit to provide high-value travel options and connect them with the people and places that matter most," Davis remarked.
Since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, Spirit has increased its capacity and market share, though it faces heightened competition from other airlines. In 2022, competitor Frontier Airlines attempted a $2.9 billion merger with Spirit, while JetBlue made a potentially more lucrative offer; however, this deal fell apart due to antitrust concerns raised by regulatory authorities.
