Thamrait Landfill Expansion: How It Elevates Waste Management Standards and Affects Businesses in Dhofar
THAMRAIT: Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah) is enhancing its engineered landfill in the Wilayat of Thamrait, Dhofar Governorate, by constructing a second cell with an additional capacity of 3,029,768 cubic metres. The initial cell, which began operations in 2017, has a capacity of 2,345,910 cubic metres. This expansion is designed to address the increasing demand for waste management services in the region.
In conjunction with the landfill expansion, be’ah is also developing an integrated leachate treatment plant. This facility will process liquid waste produced from landfill decomposition. The treated leachate will be repurposed for irrigating non-edible plants and other uses, thereby promoting sustainability, minimizing environmental impact, and conserving natural resources.
Engineer Mohsen bin Mohammed al Barwani, Director General of Planning and Service Improvement for the Municipal Solid Waste Sector, emphasized that the facility sets a standard for sustainable and scientifically managed waste systems. "The Thamrait landfill represents an effective model for sustainable, scientific waste management that adheres to global best practices to reduce emissions and maximize resource utilization," he stated.
Furthermore, al Barwani noted that be’ah is dedicated to advancing innovation in waste management, strengthening partnerships with government entities and communities, and building environmental infrastructure that will benefit future generations and foster a more sustainable future.
During the annual Khareef Dhofar Season, activity at the Thamrait landfill significantly increases, with operations reaching around 74 waste trucks daily, equating to 1,200 tonnes per day, compared to an off-season average of 58 trucks and 850 tonnes per day.
The facility’s waste reception and treatment processes adhere to strict protocols, including weighing, unloading, and primary treatment within advanced engineered cells. These operations follow international best practices to ensure environmental safety and protect public health. — ONA
