Oman to Modernise Air Traffic Surveillance System: What It Means for Aviation and Business Growth in Oman
Oman Strengthens Air Traffic Surveillance with Advanced Radar Systems
MUSCAT, JULY 5 — Oman is making a significant investment in air traffic surveillance radars to enhance the safety, efficiency, and resilience of the Sultanate’s air traffic management infrastructure.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of Oman has awarded a contract to a partnership between Thales and the Omani prime contractor Ankaa for the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of cutting-edge radar systems. These include the state-of-the-art TRACSIGMA Primary Surveillance Radar and two RSM NG Secondary Surveillance Radars, according to Thales, the France-based technology company involved in the project.
The inaugural radar is scheduled for delivery in 2027, showcasing Thales’ capability to quickly deploy advanced surveillance solutions tailored to operational demands.
Central to the initiative is the TRACSIGMA radar, the latest advancement in Thales’ TRAC family. This multi-mission L-band Primary Surveillance Radar supports both civil and military air surveillance and approach control. It detects a wide range of aircraft—from drones to commercial planes—within a radius of up to 300 kilometers. The radar provides a precise, high-resolution 3D air picture and offers enhanced resistance to interference, including from wind farms.
The comprehensive, turnkey project also encompasses the construction of radar facilities, comprising a tower, radome, and essential infrastructure.
Leveraging decades of experience in the region, Thales teams up with Ankaa, an Omani leader in space technologies, unmanned systems, AI, and cybersecurity. This partnership merges Thales’ global expertise with Ankaa’s local knowledge, ensuring robust in-country support and long-term maintenance for the radar systems.
The initiative is expected to deliver around 40% In-Country Value (ICV) by localizing maintenance and support services and providing extensive knowledge transfer and capacity-building opportunities for Omani professionals.
Christophe Lanovsky, CEO of Thales in Oman, stated, “This collaboration not only highlights Thales’ advanced technology and commitment to aviation safety but also emphasises our dedication to developing local talent and capabilities. Together, we are establishing a strong foundation for the future of air traffic management in Oman, in line with the nation’s Vision 2040.”
