SalamAir Launches Muscat–Abha Route: What It Means for Business Travel and Trade Opportunities in Oman

SalamAir Launches First Direct Flights Connecting Muscat and Abha

Muscat — SalamAir has inaugurated direct flights between Muscat and Abha, enhancing air connectivity between Oman and Saudi Arabia and bolstering tourism ties between the two nations.

The maiden flight departed on December 16, marking SalamAir’s introduction to Abha, the gateway to Saudi Arabia’s scenic Asir region. A formal launch ceremony took place at Muscat International Airport, attended by Ibrahim Saad Ibrahim bin Bishan, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Oman, officials from the Civil Aviation Authority, and key partners from the aviation sector.

Abha is a premier tourism destination in Saudi Arabia, famed for its mild climate, mountainous landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. Ongoing initiatives to preserve its natural environment have increased its attractiveness year-round, especially during summer and major tourism events.

The new direct service aims to boost two-way tourism between Oman and the Asir region, while fostering broader economic, social, and cultural exchanges between the neighboring countries.

Stephen Allen, Chief Commercial Officer of SalamAir, emphasized that this year-round service reflects the airline’s commitment to expanding travel options across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). As SalamAir’s fifth destination in Saudi Arabia, Abha strengthens the airline’s strategy to enhance regional connectivity by offering affordable and convenient flights.

Allen highlighted that the route not only provides passengers with more travel options but also serves as a vital link for business, leisure, and cultural interaction between Oman and Saudi Arabia.

Hatem al Harbi, CEO of the Tourism Destinations Sector at the Asir Region Development Authority, described the launch as a significant milestone that highlights the region’s growing tourism potential. He noted the service will encourage cooperation and attract visitors from Oman through integrated tourism experiences throughout Asir.

Ahmed al Ibrahim, Vice President of Aviation at the Saudi Tourism Authority, stated that the Muscat-Abha connection strengthens partnerships and expands opportunities to integrate Asir with key regional markets. He stressed that enhanced air connectivity will improve access to one of Saudi Arabia’s most diverse and captivating tourism locations.

SalamAir will operate four weekly flights between Muscat and Abha, providing flexible schedules and convenient onward connections. Passengers will also enjoy seamless travel across SalamAir’s expanding network, including routes to India, the Gulf region, and Salalah via Muscat.

With the addition of Abha, the resumption of flights to Beirut in December, and the ongoing expansion of its Airbus A320neo and A321neo fleet, SalamAir is reinforcing its role in supporting tourism and logistics growth in Oman. This expansion aligns with Oman Vision 2040, which aims to diversify the economy and enhance the efficiency and reach of air transport services.
