Oman’s ‘Authentic Arabia’ Concept Gains Swiss Acclaim: What It Means for Tourism and Investment Opportunities in Oman
A group of 14 travel agents from Switzerland and Germany recently completed a week-long familiarisation tour across Oman, commending the nation’s rich cultural heritage, diverse natural landscapes, and warm hospitality.
The tour, organised by Swiss operator Holiday Maker Tours AG in partnership with Oman-based Zahara Tours, included visits to prominent destinations such as Muscat, the Al Hajar Mountains, Nizwa, and the Rimal Al Sharqiya desert. The itinerary provided participants with firsthand insight into Oman’s expanding tourism infrastructure.
For many participants, this trip marked their first experience of Oman, profoundly altering their understanding of the region.
Angela Diethelm, Managing Director of diga reisen, reflected on the journey: “Oman gave us a very warm welcome from the moment we arrived. From mountains to desert to coastline, every part of the trip was unique, but what truly stood out was the hospitality of the people.” The group stayed at a variety of luxury and boutique accommodations in Al Jabal Al Akhdhar, Nizwa, and Muscat, highlighting Oman’s emerging reputation as a destination that combines cultural depth with upscale hospitality.
The visit underscored the growing appeal of Oman as a stable, experience-oriented destination for European travelers who seek authenticity beyond conventional tourist paths.
Philippe Raselli, owner of Holiday Maker Tours AG, emphasised Oman’s distinctiveness in a competitive regional market: “What makes Oman particularly special is the balance it has achieved between tourism development and preserving its cultural identity. Within a single trip, travelers can explore mountains, deserts, coastlines, and historic towns, all while enjoying exceptional hospitality.” He noted a shift in Swiss travelers’ preferences towards meaningful, customised experiences. “Today’s clients want more than sightseeing; they seek cultural interactions, personal stories, and authentic moments—and Oman delivers these brilliantly.” Raselli also highlighted the rising popularity of self-drive and multi-region itineraries.
Even luxury travelers, he observed, increasingly desire a blend of comfort and cultural immersion, a combination Oman offers seamlessly.
The itinerary included key cultural sites such as Nizwa Fort and the Oman Across Ages Museum, as well as hotel inspections that showcased the country’s evolving tourism offerings. Agents reported gaining a clearer understanding of Oman’s positioning in the global travel market.
Describing the journey as “a complete experience of landscapes, culture, and hospitality rolled into one,” Angela Diethelm said, “We traveled from mountains to desert to sea, and each place felt distinct. Yet, the warmth of the Omani people left the most lasting impression.” Tour operators acknowledge that familiarisation trips like this are crucial for shaping European perceptions of Oman, especially in markets where awareness of the destination is still developing.
Raselli stressed the power of firsthand experience in promoting Oman: “Once people visit Oman, their perception changes completely. They return home with a very different understanding of the country.” As Oman continues to bolster its tourism infrastructure and international connectivity, industry experts believe it is well-positioned to attract increasing interest from Europe’s experience-driven travelers.
“Oman is not just a destination we sell,” Raselli concluded. “It is a destination we believe in.”
