Imtidad Launches New Opportunities for Omani Renewable Companies: What It Means for Your Business Growth
MUSCAT, JUNE 29 — Oman’s newly launched Imtidad community solar programme is opening fresh business opportunities for local renewable energy companies and manufacturers, as the Sultanate advances its use of clean electricity and encourages greater involvement from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Introduced last week by the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR) in collaboration with Nama Group and licensed electricity companies, the programme enables households and businesses to access solar power without the need to install panels on their own properties. Instead, participants buy shares in grid-connected community solar stations and receive electricity bill credits proportional to the energy generated.
This initiative has also united several Omani firms spanning the renewable energy value chain, showcasing the growing expertise of local companies in engineering, manufacturing, and sustainable energy solutions.
Green Universe Enterprise (GUE), an Omani SME, was selected through a competitive tender led by Nama Distribution Company to execute the project’s first phase. Sumaya Al Rawahi, CEO of GUE, noted that the company fulfilled both the technical and commercial criteria, emphasizing that the tender was specifically designed for Omani SMEs.
Al Rawahi explained that the wider Imtidad programme is a government-driven community effort targeting schools, hospitals, residences, and other public institutions, aiming to expand renewable energy generation throughout the community.
Local manufacturer Voltamp Energy contributed to the project by supplying specialised inverter-duty transformers that connect the solar facility to the electricity grid. Issa Al Maskari, Business Development Manager for the US and EMEA at Voltamp Energy, stated that these transformers are engineered to operate reliably for 25 to 30 years under harsh environmental conditions, given proper maintenance. He confidently added that the transformers could potentially function for over 50 years with regular upkeep.
Muscat-based Nafath Renewable Energy is among several local companies competing for upcoming projects under the Imtidad programme. Nasr Al Nasseri, Business Development Officer at Nafath, highlighted the company’s comprehensive approach, managing projects from feasibility studies through design, execution, commissioning, and maintenance. He added that each installation is equipped with a monitoring system that tracks daily, monthly, and annual energy output, allowing clients to view real-time performance data.
Designed to widen access to renewable energy, the Imtidad model allows consumers to benefit from solar power without owning or maintaining infrastructure. According to APSR, the programme optimises underutilised land, lowers electricity costs for participants, and supports Oman’s clean energy transition aligned with Oman Vision 2040.
