Oman’s First Pumped Hydro Energy Project: What It Means for Renewable Investment Opportunities
MUSCAT, JUNE 29 – Authorities in Oman are evaluating the feasibility of the Sultanate’s first Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) project, which aims to utilize the Wadi Dayqah Dam in Muscat Governorate as a central component of this innovative energy storage initiative.
Pumped hydro energy storage technology capitalizes on surplus electricity, primarily produced by solar and wind energy during low-demand periods, to elevate water from a lower reservoir to an upper one. When the demand for electricity rises or renewable generation decreases, this stored water is released through turbines to generate electricity, which is then fed back into the grid.
The feasibility study, conducted by the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR) in coordination with other related agencies, suggests utilizing the natural landscape of Wadi Dayqah. This plan involves using the existing dam reservoir as the lower reservoir while constructing a new upper reservoir on the Jabal Abyad plateau.
This proposed system is expected to have an installed capacity of 1,975 MW, offering up to nine hours of energy storage and providing about 17,970 MWh of dispatchable electricity. It aims to capture surplus solar and wind energy during off-peak periods and release it during peak demand times. This approach would not only enhance grid stability but also reduce reliance on gas-fired generation, lower carbon emissions, and alleviate the financial burden of fuel subsidies.
Through large-scale energy storage, grid balancing, frequency regulation, and backup capacity, pumped hydro can support the integration of a greater proportion of variable renewable energy, decreasing the dependence on gas-fired power generation.
