Oman’s Rising Culinary Scene: Opportunities for Investors and Entrepreneurs in the Gulf’s Hidden Gem

A Quiet Culinary Revolution in Oman’s Kitchens

A subtle yet profound transformation is occurring in the kitchens of Oman. In Muscat, the resonant clinking of cutlery and fragrant spices signal more than just a dining boom; they represent a cultural shift that is redefining how the Sultanate approaches food, celebrations, and hospitality. Unlike its Gulf neighbors known for celebrity chef-driven restaurants, Oman’s culinary narrative is evolving at a more deliberate pace, embracing depth and authenticity. Here, cuisine has become a medium for storytelling, intricately linking the nation’s seafaring heritage with its modern cosmopolitan identity.

Earlier this month at Roberto’s Muscat, chefs Gian Tafuri and Ciro Mancini hosted a special event titled Taste of Ischia. This one-night collaboration transported guests to the volcanic coastline of southern Italy, masterfully blending Mediterranean sophistication with the warmth of Omani hospitality. This event is part of a series where Chef Gian collaborates with various Italian chefs to introduce unique culinary experiences to Oman.

Just a few kilometers away, the Mandarin Oriental, Muscat is solidifying Oman’s status in the global dining arena. Its Italian restaurant, Essenza, showcased A Taste of Talea, a three-night collaboration between Chef Luigi Stinga from Talea at Emirates Palace and Essenza’s own Chef Davide Borin. The menu elegantly fused classical and coastal Italian cuisines, featuring dishes from Amalfi-inspired lemon risotto to truffle-infused veal, all framed by the hotel’s sophisticated ambiance and warm hospitality. This experience serves as a reminder that Oman’s fine dining future involves harmonizing precision with heartfelt connections.

Shangri-La Muscat has adopted a similar approach with its month-long festival, Taste of Shangri-La, running throughout October. Each of the resort’s premier restaurants offers curated six-course menus that explore a variety of textures and flavors, reflecting Oman’s laid-back luxury.

The JW Marriott Muscat illustrates how large hotels are redefining culinary diversity. Its four flagship restaurants—Kitchen 7, Pink Salt, Catch, and Butter Buns—have introduced refreshed menus, transforming the property into a vibrant food district. Kitchen 7 features an open-kitchen concept for immediate international dining experiences, while Pink Salt elevates wood-fired grilling into an artistic endeavor. Catch celebrates the sea with Mediterranean-inspired dishes and Butter Buns reimagines the casual burger as a chef-driven delight, demonstrating that variety can coexist with quality.

At The St. Regis Al Mouj Muscat Resort, heritage meets modern cuisine at Karibu, a restaurant that honors the historic Spice Route, connecting Zanzibar, India, and Oman. Its revamped menu celebrates this rich history with weekly themed nights, offering a journey through each culture’s culinary delights—from comforting curries to vibrant Zanzibari evenings filled with live music.

In the same resort, Zorba has carved a niche for itself with its atmospheric Sunset Dinner experience, where guests enjoy Mediterranean dishes as the sun sets, turning dining into a performance art that incorporates the beauty of nature.

W Muscat’s Ba Ban has also drawn inspiration from the Silk Road, unveiling a limited-edition menu that allows diners to experience a culinary journey spanning from Xi’an to Muscat through flavors rich in spice and history.

In Jabal Akhdar, Alila remains dedicated to seasonal culinary experiences that celebrate the mountains. Chef Pankaj has crafted exquisite dishes around local harvests, while the family-friendly Dusit D2 Naseem Park has enhanced its charm with Omani-themed dinners, providing an authentic dining experience for visitors.

In Salalah, Anantara Al Baleed is continuing its tradition of vibrant food festivals, welcoming guest chefs who infuse fresh perspectives into the culinary scene, alongside Alila Hinu Bay, which serves inventive dishes featuring camel’s milk and the unique flavor of frankincense.

Together, these culinary experiences illustrate a nation undergoing a gastronomic transformation. Oman’s food scene does not blindly chase trends; rather, it interprets them with grace, blending international fine dining with its own cultural richness. Local chefs are moving away from merely replicating foreign recipes and are instead crafting unique narratives that place Omani ingredients, spices, and storytelling at their core.

What sets Oman apart is its quiet ambition. There are no grandiose claims of becoming the next gastronomic capital; rather, there is a confident authenticity that shines through. Whether it’s the precise creativity at the Mandarin Oriental, the heritage-focused offerings at Karibu, or the innovative flair at Roberto’s and Ba Ban, Oman’s dining landscape is becoming a canvas where identity and creativity coexist.

As day turns to dusk in Muscat, and the scents of frankincense blend with the aromas of charcoal and citrus, it becomes clear that Oman’s culinary strength lies not in ostentation but in its soulful essence. The country’s rise may be understated, but in the steady rhythm of its kitchens and the artistry of its dishes, Oman is creating a new narrative for dining in the Gulf.
