Jaguar’s Prolonged Shutdown Due to Cyberattack: Implications for Investors and the Automotive Industry
Jaguar Land Rover Halts Production Due to Cyberattack
Jaguar Land Rover, the largest car manufacturer in Britain, has announced that its production will remain suspended until at least October 1 due to a cyberattack that has incapacitated many of its systems for several weeks.
The cyber intrusion, which impacted the company’s retail and production operations, is part of a broader wave of cyber and ransomware attacks that have disrupted various European businesses, including hospitals, charities, and airports in cities such as Brussels, Berlin, Dublin, and London.
These attacks have proven expensive, with organizations often taking months to restore their operations online. Notably, Marks & Spencer, one of Britain’s largest retailers, experienced a “highly sophisticated” cyberattack in April, which the company estimated would result in approximately £300 million ($405 million) in lost profits for the year.
Jaguar Land Rover, known for its luxury vehicles like Jaguars, Defenders, and Range Rovers, has not produced any cars in over three weeks since publicly acknowledging the attack in early September. Initially, the company informed employees, suppliers, and partners that production would resume on Wednesday. However, a statement released on Tuesday indicated an extension of the production pause as they work towards a safe restart.
“To provide clarity for the coming week, we made this decision while we build a timeline for the phased restart of our operations and continue our investigation,” the statement read.
Neither Jaguar Land Rover nor British government officials have disclosed any suspects in the attack.
Rachel Reeves, Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, stated that government officials are collaborating closely with the company. “There is a broader issue at stake here: ensuring that foreign states, including Russia, cannot disrupt production, flights, or public services in Britain,” she remarked in an interview with ITV News, referring to the escalating threat.
The Trump administration previously imposed a 27.5% tariff on cars imported from Britain to the United States, a measure that could have severely impacted Britain’s struggling auto industry. As a result, Jaguar Land Rover temporarily halted car shipments to the U.S. in April due to uncertainty surrounding the tariffs.
However, following the introduction of a reduced 10% tariff on car exports from Britain to the U.S., sales saw a rebound in July after three consecutive months of decline, according to data from Britain’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
