North Oman Solar Project Success: Implications for Renewable Energy Investment Opportunities in Oman
MUSCAT, JUNE 22 — OQ Alternative Energies (OQAE), a division of OQ Group, and French integrated energy firm TotalEnergies have successfully energized the North Oman Solar project, marking a significant step ahead of its anticipated commercial launch.
The 105 MW North Oman Solar initiative, located at Saih Nihada in the Block 6 concession area of Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), is a utility-scale photovoltaic plant. In the coming days and weeks, it will provide clean electricity to support PDO’s oil and gas operations as part of its decarbonization strategy.
Sami al Mazidi, Executive Managing Director of Renewable Energy Projects at OQ Alternative Energy and TotalEnergies JV, announced the project’s successful back-energization, saying, “I am pleased to share the successful achievement of back-energization today at the North Oman Solar Project—this is a critical milestone marking our transition from construction to the final phases of commissioning and operations.”
He emphasized that the success of the project reflects the strength of teamwork, collaboration, and a unified commitment to excellence among all parties involved.
The North Oman Solar project is one of three clean energy initiatives undertaken by the OQAE-TotalEnergies joint venture for PDO. Collectively termed the Rawafid Projects, they also include the Riyah-1 and Riyah-2 wind farms, which are under construction at PDO’s Amin and West Nimr fields in southern Oman, with a total capacity of 234 MW.
Almoatasem Al Ismaili, Project Manager at OQ Alternative Energy, expressed pride in achieving this important milestone, noting, “Successful back-energization marks a major step towards the Commercial Operation Date (COD). This success was made possible through strong teamwork, close coordination, and a sustained focus on safe execution.”
Niraj Pandiya, Project Director for TotalEnergies Renewables MEA, remarked, “This achievement highlights the strength of the partnership between TotalEnergies and OQAE. Their complementary capabilities have been vital to the project’s success. While we celebrate the completion of the construction phase and the energization of our first renewable energy project in Oman, this is just the beginning of our collaborative journey. We look forward to many more successful projects in the years ahead.”
The North Oman Solar project is expected to commence commercial operations in Q2 2026, while the two wind farms are slated to begin operations in Q4 2026. OQAE holds a 51% stake in the joint venture, with TotalEnergies owning the remaining 49%.
