MSX Market Cap Surpasses RO 32bn: What Investors Need to Know as Capital Market Reforms Deepen in Oman
The Muscat Stock Exchange (MSX) has announced that its market capitalization surpassed RO 32 billion in 2025, marking a significant increase from approximately RO 22 billion at the end of 2021. This milestone coincides with the completion of five years under a new corporate structure designed to transform Oman’s capital market and attract greater investment.
Trading activity on the MSX also experienced remarkable growth, with the total trading value soaring from about RO 818 million in 2021 to over RO 5 billion in 2025—an increase of more than 5.7 times within five years.
This growth underscores a major phase of transformation in Oman’s financial market sector, following MSX’s 2021 transition from the Muscat Securities Market into a company owned by the Oman Investment Authority (OIA). The restructuring aimed to establish the exchange as a commercially driven and globally connected financial institution supportive of Oman Vision 2040, economic diversification, and private-sector development.
Mohammed bin Mahfoudh Al Ardhi, Chairman of MSX, emphasized that the transition has granted the exchange greater flexibility to accelerate strategic initiatives and enhance market competitiveness. “The progress achieved in recent years is evident not only in stronger market performance and increased market capitalization but also in creating a more sustainable ecosystem through improved confidence, efficiency, and expanded investment opportunities,” he said.
Over the past five years, MSX has implemented numerous structural, regulatory, and operational reforms to modernize the Omani market and align it with international standards. Initiatives include the launch of the OPTIQ trading platform, establishment of specialized risk, compliance, and ESG functions, and introduction of auction-based pricing mechanisms to boost transparency and efficiency.
The exchange has also enhanced its market infrastructure by introducing regulations for securities lending and short selling, electronic trading rules, liquidity provider activities, and appointing the market’s first market maker.
To broaden investment options, MSX has renewed IPO activity, promoted dual listings with GCC markets, expanded investment products, and launched the Alternative Investment Market (AIM), targeting growth-focused and smaller companies.
MSX has raised its regional and international profile, assuming the presidency of the Arab Federation of Capital Markets in 2023 and increasing engagement with investors and financial institutions in the UK and the US.
Sustainability has become a core element of MSX’s strategy, demonstrated by the introduction of Oman’s first national ESG disclosure guide and adoption of the GCC unified ESG framework, reflecting the growing emphasis of global investors on governance and sustainable finance.
The exchange attributes its recent growth to broader improvements in Oman’s economic environment, including stronger fiscal indicators, reduced public debt, improved sovereign credit ratings, and heightened investor confidence.
Looking ahead, MSX intends to focus on deepening market liquidity, expanding investment instruments, and enhancing integration with regional and international financial markets as it embarks on its next development phase.
