Sohar Container Terminal’s New Pact for 12 Electric Gantry Cranes: What It Means for Sustainable Growth and Efficiency in Oman’s Logistics Sector
Hutchison Ports Sohar has advanced its sustainability efforts by signing an agreement with ZPMC in Shanghai to acquire 12 automated electric Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (AeRTGCs), expected to be delivered in the second quarter of 2027.
These AeRTGCs are designed to minimize the environmental impact of port operations and reinforce Hutchison Ports Sohar’s status as a smart port dedicated to responsible growth and environmental stewardship. Unlike conventional RTGCs, the new cranes will operate with zero emissions via a high-voltage conductor bar system and feature both automatic and remote-control functions. They will have a stacking capacity of up to six containers high and incorporate advanced safety features such as anti-collision and anti-sway controls, enhancing operational efficiency and safety. This investment will boost the port’s handling capacity and terminal efficiency.
Andy Tsoi, Managing Director of Hutchison Ports Middle East and Africa, stated, “This investment reflects Hutchison Ports’ long-term commitment to Oman and our confidence in the Sultanate’s role as a regional logistics hub. Our efforts support the sustainable development of Hutchison Ports Sohar in line with Oman’s Logistics 2040 strategy, the national Net-Zero target, and Oman Vision 2040.”
Anacin Kum, CEO of Hutchison Ports Sohar, emphasized the significance of the investment, saying, “The introduction of AeRTGCs will enhance our terminal’s capacity and operational efficiency, allowing us to provide faster, safer, and more reliable services amid growing demand.”
Emile Hoogsteden, CEO of SOHAR Port, highlighted that Hutchison Ports Sohar’s continued investments demonstrate a strong commitment to SOHAR and the integrated port and logistics ecosystem. He added that strategic investments and international partnerships are crucial for maintaining competitiveness, enabling sustainable growth, and delivering value to customers and supply chains.
This latest acquisition complements the port’s existing green initiatives, including automated electric quay cranes, electric trucks, electric forklifts, and the region’s first solar-powered inspection facility. Together, these advancements underscore Hutchison Ports Sohar’s dedication to its Net-Zero roadmap and alignment with Oman’s Logistics 2040 strategy and wider sustainability goals.
