Thales and Ankaa Partner to Boost Oman’s Air Traffic Surveillance: What It Means for Aviation and Business Growth
Muscat: Thales, a leading provider of advanced technologies in the defence, aerospace, and cyber & digital sectors, has signed a contract with Oman’s Ankaa to deliver state-of-the-art radar systems for the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The agreement includes the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of Thales’ latest-generation TRACSIGMA Primary Surveillance radar along with two RSM NG Secondary Surveillance radars.
The first radar installation is scheduled for delivery in 2027. This upgrade will significantly enhance the safety, efficiency, and resilience of Oman’s air traffic surveillance infrastructure, supporting the country’s aviation growth aligned with Vision 2040 modernization goals.
At the heart of the project is the TRACSIGMA radar, Thales’ multi-mission L-band Primary Surveillance Radar and the newest evolution in the TRAC family. It supports simultaneous civil and military air surveillance and approach control. Capable of detecting all types of aircraft—from drones to commercial planes—TRACSIGMA offers a range of up to 300 km and provides a high-resolution, accurate 3D air picture with strong resilience against interference, including windfarm-related disruptions.
The RSM NG radars complement TRACSIGMA by enhancing aircraft identification and tracking. They combine simultaneous Enhanced Mode S interrogations with redundant ADS-B detection and can operate as stand-alone units or co-mounted with the TRACSIGMA radar. Both systems meet the latest ICAO and EUROCONTROL standards and feature advanced cybersecurity protections. The project also includes the construction of complete radar sites, including towers, radomes, and associated infrastructure.
Thales is partnering with Ankaa, an Omani company specializing in space technologies, unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. This collaboration leverages Thales’ global expertise and Ankaa’s local knowledge to ensure strong in-country presence and comprehensive long-term support for the radar systems’ lifecycle. The project is expected to generate about 40% In-Country Value (ICV) by localizing maintenance and support services while facilitating extensive knowledge transfer and capacity-building programs for Omani professionals.
Christophe Lanovsky, CEO of Thales in Oman, stated, “This collaboration not only showcases Thales’ advanced technology and commitment to aviation safety but also underscores our dedication to nurturing local talent and capabilities. Together, we are establishing a robust framework for the future of air traffic management in Oman, in line with the nation’s Vision 2040.”
