Muscat is Oman's capital and largest city, and the country's political, economic and cultural centre. According to the Foreign Ministry, it has been a trading port since the first century and was established as the capital in 1793. The governorate covers about 3,500 square kilometres and has about 1.56 million people.

The six wilayats

Muscat Governorate is made up of Muscat, Muttrah, Bawshar, Seeb, Al Amarat and Qurayyat. Most first-time visitors spend their time in Muttrah and old Muscat on the bay, and along the coast at Qurum.
