Raysut Port Upgrade: A Major Boost for Fisheries Investment and Business Growth in Oman
SALALAH: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has successfully completed the rehabilitation of Raysut Fishing Port in Salalah, with an investment exceeding RO 2.9 million. This project significantly enhances fisheries infrastructure in Dhofar Governorate and aims to support future investment opportunities in the sector.
As part of the ministry’s comprehensive strategy to boost the efficiency of fishing ports, the rehabilitation elevates their role in economic growth, food security, and the development of coastal communities.
Key components of the rehabilitation include the construction of a new 610-metre breakwater to shield the port basin from sand buildup, sea currents, and high waves. Additionally, a 250-metre breakwater was built to minimize sand and silt intrusion and to improve water circulation within the harbour.
The project also reclaimed approximately 34,000 square metres of land designated for future port expansion and development of fisheries and logistics-related facilities.
A 70-metre fixed pier was constructed to accommodate artisanal fishing vessels and support fish handling operations. Moreover, a new slipway was developed to facilitate boat launching and maintenance services.
Engineer Mohammed bin Abdullah al Rashdi, the project manager, confirmed the completion of rehabilitation work, which will significantly enhance the port’s operational capacity and maritime safety standards. The project included the construction of 1,000 metres of internal roads equipped with lighting to improve traffic flow and safety within the port. A comprehensive surveillance camera system was also installed to bolster security and monitor activities.
Al Rashdi highlighted that these improvements will reduce sand accumulation inside the port basin, streamline navigation, and improve vessel movement efficiency. The newly reclaimed land is expected to attract future investments and service projects, increasing the port’s economic value and reinforcing its role as a key logistics and development hub.
According to the ministry, fish production in Salalah reached 14,059 tonnes in 2025, with a total value of RO 9.2 million.
Al Rashdi emphasized that continued investment in fishing ports is vital for enhancing food security, driving economic growth, and creating employment and investment opportunities in coastal regions. — ONA
